www.4car.co.uk has updated their spy shot section and it includes 3 shots of a cooper S WITHOUT the black tape on the intake scoop. enjoy!

Great photos. The scoop actually looks very nice, but I hope that the Cooper S has the chrome grill rather than the black one as fitted to the MINI ONE.

Still, it looks like someone couldn't resist putting just one piece of tape on the scoop - old habits die hard. :P

Without large wodges of black tape, the scoop seems much less intrusive than on previous shots - I quite liked it anyway. Makes you wonder whether the adverse reactions to the taped version have had any impact on its shape or size.

As to the colour of the grill, the BMW marketing bumph says that it will be body coloured. With luck, BMW will allow it to be provided in chrome as a no cost option. Could anyone find an answer to this?

I agree, the scoop looks nice. Thankfully nobody's got carried away with the car's 'sporting ambitions'...
I quite like the grille in plain black myself. Looks cheaper than the One but with chrome it just wouldn't look so agressive.

Maybe I got to used to the beautiful lines of the hood without the scoop. I think I'll pursue modifying a regular hood with one NASA scoop on one side, or maybe too small NASA scoops on each side and at the mid-point.

I think he meant NACA not NASA. It has to do with which government agency developed them way back when (the 50's I think).

For added interest.

NACA effectively became NASA in 1958 as a direct result of the blow to US confidence by the USSR`s successful Sputnik mission.

The NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) duct is explained in "submerged-duct entrances" (how very well described!) dated November 1945 at:-

http://naca.larc.nasa.gov/reports/1945/naca-acr-5i20/

I don`t think that even the Cooper S is quite fast enough to get the full benefit!

Many race cars, and aircraft, of course, do still employ this type of intake!
