Can you buy the mini-cooper S w/ automatic transmission?

Maybe just to elaborate a little. It had been rumoured that the S would be available with an SMG (Sequential Maual Gearbox) as well as the 6-speed Getrag unit.

Unfortunately this never happened, but may become available later either in the S, or possibly the Mpower/Alpina versions rumoured about here and elsewhere.

From what I've read here, and in various publications over the last 9 months or so, the increased power of the S was too great for the cooper 5 speed gearbox to reliably handle, so an alternative was the stronger Getrag unit. the fact that it was a six speed was a bonus for the marketers but not a huge leap in terms of functionality. Top speed in the S is achieved in 5th Gear, not 6th!! apparently. This power increase has inevitably ruled out the Automatic box as well, which is a shame for those who would have preferred it.

But yes, as PIT has stated in short......no, but possibly a better alternative later in the SMG verion.

An auto spoils it! IMHO

I would always buy a manual M3, never and SMG!

I doubt they would due to the cost involved, but if BMW were to offer the SMG transmission on the 'S', i'd opt for it. Not that I don't love driving a manual, it's just that the SMG so cool! Flick through the gears, and the engine automatically blips the throttle for downshifts. You can pretend you're a Formula One driver before they introduced the automatic gearchange.

It would turn a go-kart into a video game.
