England Fuel consumption (MINI newbie)

Hi everyone,

Just wondered how many miles people are getting to a tankfull. I am currently getting around 270ish miles from full to the light going on.... Is that about right?

Cheers

Worst tankful yet was about 270-280 miles. Typically, I am getting about 300-310 miles. Sounds like you are having a lot of fun driving!

Pete,

Please consider the possibility that a "gallon" in the U.K. may not be the same as a "gallon" in the U.S. A few decades ago we ( UK and US) tried to convert to the metric system so as to be standardized with the rest of the world, the conversion was not successful because people refuse to change. The only way I know to compare our systems at this time is by litre, unfortunately, the USA does not sell gasoline by the litre because we refuse to go along with the rest of the world's standard. Until we all can agree on a world "standard" we will continue to be confused... I think that it is all related to the length of an old King's shoe, or the weight of someone's "stone".

Not my idea of clear communication!

Our Cooper CVT does about 35 on a motorway run and about 26 on the morning run to work. That's about the same as my Subaru 2.5 auto estate. Not that good on economy for a 1.6 really.

Hi Pete,
I'm getting about the same mileage per tankful as you are...270-280 till the light comes on...

my girlfriend can get much further on a tank of gas in my car...I guess its my spirited driving style (I'm really NOT a radical driver though)...so driving style matters alot in this car...and I use 91 octane gas, which is what is available here in California...

Tom D, I think when you compare miles per tank it allows universal comparisons, providing all MCS gas tanks are a standard size...

I mean if the tanks are the same volume, and a mile = a mile, then its apples to apples...

When I first got mine, I was getting around 30 mpg (US Gallon) and about 300-330 miles before the light came on. Now, with 10k on car, and before the 10k service is done, I'm getting 220-250 miles before the light comes on and about 22 mpg (US Gallon). I do a lot of short distance driving, but even long distance comes out similar.

I went so far as to keep the RPMs under 4000 and slower acceleration for a full tank, but no change in the consumption.

I'm hoping it will go up a bit after the service.

I've not been paying attention to mileage between fill-ups but from the trip computer I'm averaging 21-23 miles for each gallon of finest Optimax. MCS has covered just under 1100 miles and most of my driving at the moment is crawling through town on the daily grind.

Well, I say crawling, but as you fellow S-ers understand, I really mean zipping between gaps, nailing everything in site from the lights and treating pedestrians to the wonderful sound of a popping exhaust on the over-run

HTH . I'm sad and record my fuel usage.
Miles ---MPG (calculated not OBC)
315--- 31.8
259--- 25.9
298--- 28.2
280--- 29.3
299--- 28.5
288--- 26.9
243--- 23.5
283--- 25.6
244--- 23.0

its all Shell Optimax BTW

Thats 279 miles per tank on average and 27.0 MPG.
(On my car the OBC trip computer seems to register an average MPG thats always 2MPG above the actual. I reset each time on fill up)
Please note that recently my commuting has become lots of small journeys which REALLY drops the 'S' mpg.
The warm up phase of the mini seems to burn a lot of fuel.
Longer runs and 28+ is possible.
In comparison my old Fiat Coupe 20VTurbo was actually better on fuel ... go figure.

I'm getting approx 240 miles to a full tank!

For a car with the performance of the MCS I would expect more..................this is the same consumption as my M3 which has a 3.2 litre lump!

Yeh but you'll probably find that for 'like for like' performance the M3 engine is less stressed. I'm sure if you were really booting your M3 you would be:

a) going much faster than you would in your S
b) using more fuel than you would in your S

Plus, superchargers are know for being less fuel efficient, hence BMWs decision to switch to turbo charging for the next generation (boo).

my last full tank of optimax only got me 190 miles!! the light was on for a while before i filled up too!!

dont think i've ever had over 250 from a full tank.

most my journeys are quite short and i do boot it everywhere so i've only got myself to blame!!

Is it only me who gets about 350 miles out of a tank then?

My drive to and from work is 18 miles each way, majority of it being motorway miles at 70mph with the cruise on.

Last time out at Brands Hatch, I managed 9mpg, so I do know how to drive the car uneconomically!

Like many here in the uk, I use Optimax for these figures.

Had 260 miles on the last tank (bing & red light) but that was a run to the mountains and a bit above the posted limit ("but sorry officer, I did't realize that the 120 was KPM in Canada, I just thought you had more civalized speed rules"). I did run-down an A4 wagon on the twisties between Vancouver ans Whistler and it was trying hard to make it up the mountain as fast as it could.

Never more than 220 and often under 200 with a record 9mpg on a recent track day. I must get some shares in Shell

My computer's reading 28.5mpg at the mo, on the current tankful of normal unleaded (the car's got less than 200 miles on the clock, so thought putting Optimax in at this stage when I'm only taking her to 4000rpm is a bit pointless).

P.S. First mod today - rubber floor mats! (The blue cloth ones weren't gunna stay clean for 5 minutes)

Computer usually tells me I'm doing around 26mpg to work and back through Derby. We did a run to the lakes a couple of weeks back, so that was a lot of motorway miles mixed with twisties and a few minor snarlups.
Got an average of 36mpg, which I thought was pretty good considering we weren't hanging around all the time. My Dad reacons his Astra 1.6 is similar..

In saying that, my Golf 1.8T, especially when it was chipped up would easily manage over 40 to the gallon at 70 on the motorway and usually 28-30 through town.
The Golf used less petrol which is pretty impressive for a heavier car with an engine thats been around for years now...

But I didn't buy my S for economy

I have had my MCS for 1 month now and i have been keeping a close eye on what fuel economy i get out the car depending how i drive it.

My daily commute is a 150 mile round trip consisting mostly of motorway driving, but with about 10 miles each way of country roads near where i live, where i find it hard to resist to putting my foot down

On the motorway stint of my journey, i try and stick as close to 70 mph as possible, only going above this speed to overtake other traffic that is travelling slower than me lol.

I find that i can average around 400 miles to a full tank using Optimax and driving this way, which i'm quite impressed with. I usually average around 39 mpg ish, although i have had it up in the 40's on a few occassions.

It takes quite a bit of self discipline to drive so sedately in such a great performance car, but due to the amount of mileage i do driving to work it would cost me a fortune if i was flooring it all the time.

I do allow myself to have more fun at weekends however and cane it a bit more. I have noticed that when the car is driven harder, it consumes fuel at a much quicker rate than i do with my driving eticate during the week
