Post "Stonk" is here, where have the bends gone?!

"Stonk" was handed over on Friday evening: a customer spec S, raring to go. Been too busy to post since then but here are a few observations in case anyone's interested:

1.

and 3-0 v Denmark to boot, so
(It's getting embarrassing walking around with a fixed, slightly imbecilic grin)

2. I was looking forward to seeing how he performed around corners, but all the usual bends had mysteriously vanished - the roads around where I live suddenly seemed remarkably straight. Now I know what all these "MINI Runs" are about - must be MINI owners out in search of windy roads, but I doubt if they'll find any N of the Alps!

The roads have been very wet and greasy, I don't have DSC and I'm taking it carefully to start off with, at least 'til the tyre/brake/clutch run-in periods are complete. But no doubt about it, he's as sure footed as they come. No sign of activity from the ASC+T light yet.

3. But seriously, I don't think we need another S review on here, other than to say that I endorse the good ones and rubbish to the rest! Even sticking carefully to a 4000 RPM limit, the difference in performance to the regular Cooper is unmistakeable. I can't get enough of that torque (as has been said before, so much of it in any gear), and I just can't wait for 1250M to appear on the odometer as that red line is starting to look more and more tempting.

4. Sorry no pics, suffice to say je ne regret rien, when it comes to choice of DS/Black + sunroof. Stonk has the apparently unpopular standard silver 16" X-lite rims, and he and I think they look great. He's looking a little dirty now, but after hanging around MINI2 I'm a bit wary of giving him bath in case anything falls off.

5. The “WOW factor” has largely worn off for MINIs in the UK, and the average person might not immediately notice the S’s differences, so I wasn’t expecting much attention. But my first port of call after collecting the car involved waiting for some folks in a restaurant some satisfying 30 miles drive away. Sitting strategically by the window it was most pleasing to watch a besuited office worker on his way home walk past the car, double-take, then walk on, glance over his shoulder and then stop, turn round and give “Stonk” a good long stare!

6. There was a minor glitch with my spec, but the dealer is sorting out without any fuss or bother.

7. There was an "Are MINIs male or female" thread on here somewhere. It turns out that "Stonk" is a red-blooded male Cooper S, judging by the rather obvious bulge in under the bonnet and the amply developed muscle. IMHO the Cooper is the sleek and graceful female of the species, and the ONE is the playful juvenile stage of the life cycle. Careful observation of all members of this highly-evolved, sophisticated species gives great pleasure, exceeded only by that of owning one.

8. The waiting game has been murder, but now it's over. So thanks to everyone on MINI2 for helping to pass the time and for easing the waiting pain with all those MINI titbits. To those still waiting, I say courage, your time will come and it’s going to be worth it!

I was going to get a digital camera, but suddenly the piggy bank looks rather empty! For now, you'll just have to imagine the black roof and mirrors, and a lot more mud on the car, but this gives the impression of what I was enjoying today!

And finally found those curves I was looking for. They were massing for a counter-attack in the Trossachs, on the the Aberfoyle to Brig O'Turk road, see here.

Stonk knew no fear, and aquitted himself with great honour. However, a slightly humbling experience for the driver, who will need a bit more practice before he can do justice to this miracle on 4 wheels!

I know exactly what you mean. At the moment a digital camera is the last thing on my list.
