If you're driving 40 miles each way, I'll bet you're driving a bit over the speed limit...
The MINI's less-than-stellar aerodyamics make for a huge penalty in fuel consumption with speed, so cars that are far larger will get about the same mileage on the highway.

Our "normal" summer mileage, with the air conditioning on and only city driving was around 26-27mpg (US). Throwing in a few longer trips would not change the result much if we did our normal 80-ish mph (with a few dashes faster than that).

Now, this fall, with $3.20/gallon gas and no air conditioner (because we don't need it, not because its broken), we've dropped the speed a bit. Our last three tanks have been 32,30,33mpg, and we're looking at about 30 for this tank. We've also tried to be a little more relaxed with the accelerator pedal...

Driving style is the number 2 contributor to mileage – right after living in the UK, which apparently gives you a 25% improvement automatically

I usually get around 31.7mpg out of my cooper. I think it is quite reasonable considering i drive with a heavy right foot!
There is no way i could ever get 400 miles out of a tank tho. Most ive ever had is round about 320/330.

over 2 coopers and 100000 miles give or take a couple I always read between 29-31 mpg, almost entirely city driving (average speed usually 20mph :/ ) with air con on almost all the time.... the new one is only returning 26 mpg .. but then only covered 300 miles so no where near ran in........... still smiling

34/35 mpg, with standard 15inch rocket wheels, continental econtact tyres, and a/c running most of the time. And its *driven* - as it has been from day one

32.9 on the OBC with 4000 miles on the clock.

Mainly a mix of very short trips (1.5 miles to work), and town driving, with the odd half decent run thrown in every now and again.

worked it out and usually average around 38mpg now it has done 37,000miles which is usually driven fairly hard out of town.

since i got the car i have used just under 1000 gallons doing just over 37,000 miles resulting in an average of just over 37mpg which im pleased with

when i first got the car no matter how gently i treated it i got around 34-36 best. On a recent run back up to uni i got 45.5mpg

40 gallons? At 40mpg, which is what I'm currently getting from my (carefully-driven) Cooper, I'd get 1600 miles out of a tank!

mpg, surely?
