Offline | Why is 55 One quicker than my 54 Cooper?? Hi everyone, I've just had my 54 reg Cooper into the dealer to fix my annoying dashboard rattle and they gave me a 55 reg One as a courtesy car. Having never driven one before, I was expecting it to be quite a lot slower than my Cooper. To my amazement, it was far more responsive, picking up much better in 2nd and 3rd gears!!!! I know this is not just me being pedantic, because at work there is a long stretch with speed bumps and when slowing down to 10mph and accelerating between these in 2nd gear, the One was the far more eager. Much as I love my Cooper, this has annoyed and upset me a bit as I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with my car? I asked the dealer and they just said "...Oh, but they're completely different cars....." Well as far as I know it's only the ECU that's different, not the engine or anything! Has anyone else found this or should I complain again? Please help.. G |

Offline | Courtesy cars are driven a lot harder, therefore the engine is a worn in a way to make it more responsive (although this may not be best for long term value...). You may have bedded the car in a little too softly? |

Offline | Hi guys, thanks for the feedback. My Cooper runs on 16" FIN alloys and the One had the standard 15" ones. It did feel as though the One ran out of steam approaching 5000rpm, but definitely when I drove it from cold in the morning, there was no hesitation or unresponsiveness that I am used to with my Cooper I guess cos it's my car I drive it a bit more carefully and try not to thrash it Thanks for the help anyway G |

Offline | Hire cars have been revved to the max, thus the engine is simply free'er. if you stretch the legs on yours more often, it will free up too. i took a one hire car out and made mine feel slow. so i gave mine the berries more often and hey presto, its a flyer!! P. J : |

Offline | Interesting ... do you put them in the fuel tank or just on the bonnet? Lol! PS. You know I am only joking PJH - I like it. Will give mine the berries tomorrow and see what happens ![]() |

Offline | Being a biker, the old adage i stick to is, " If you want a fast one, thrash the nuts off it from day one, if you want reliability run it in more gently" Only keeping my S for 60,000 miles so has been thrashed to the rev limiter everyday!! ![]() |

| OllyH | When I was looking at buying a MINI I test drove both the One and the Cooper. The dealer who was selling me the car told me that in her opinion, the One is a nippier car around town because it has most of it's power lower down the rev range, whereas to get maximum power from a Cooper you have to rev it - you feel a real change in acceleration once over 3,000 revs in my opinion. It's just a difference in engine management and most likely nothing wrong with your Cooper. Overall the Cooper is definetley a faster car. |

| Merry Prankster | my 54 cooper has been absolutely ragged ( and I do mean RAGGED-its a lease car) from day one, and is running on rocket 15"ers, and worries a friends S (upto about 100mph) - its all about driving style and wheels ![]() And OllyH - the torque in the cooper comes in bang on 4,400 revs....its not just a change in engine management, the coopers throttle will physically open wider than the one.... I'd rather be a lightning rod than a seismograph ![]() Ken Kesey 1935-2001 |

Offline | I've driven two courtesy ones against my cooper and I don't think there is any real difference at low engine speeds because I would guess the torque and power curves up to around 3,000rpm are relatively similar, however above 4,000rpm I've found the ones to be noticeably slower - whereas the cooper hits 60mph in 2nd with ease, in a one you're sitting there watching the speedometer 52, 54, 56, 57mph and you're thinking 'come on'! - which is probably exactly what a S owner thinks when driving a cooper! |

Offline | the cooper is set a classic driver car set up its top end power is brilliant imo and in 2nd and 3rd and 4th just keeps going and going esp when the ecu has adapted to the 'spirited' setting the drive is brilliant and from experince in the car the ecu adaption dose make a huge difference to the way the cooper responds ![]() ![]() |

Offline | i wouldnt be suprised if the One has been chipped. My dealer admitted to me that some of their demonstrators have been chipped but they keep quiet. This was after I complained that my Cooper wasnt as fast as the one i borrowed before I bought and I could get nowhere near that ones MPG (and this was when mine had done more miles too). A chip later and its running the same ![]() ![]() |
