06 v 02 Coop

Just got a new 06 coop. Previously owned a '02 coop and maybe it's just me but the '06 is feeling much quicker and has a more sporty sound. I'm still running in so I can't wait to really let it all go! Anyone else found this or know why??

The gear ratios were changed in July 2004 resulting in better acceleration.

New airbox might also have changed the sound from up front. The '02's box was square while the '05 and '06 box is wedge shaped.

Also as Miniac said above, the '02s had a longer geared Midland gearbox while the newer Coopers have a shorter geared, but still 5-speed Getrag. The 2007's will have 6-speed Getrags and I must say that will be nice as while the acceleration of the new Getrag 5-speed is certainly better it is pulling more RPMs at fast freeway speeds than the old Midland box did which sounds sporty but isn't great for gas mileage; an extra gear will alleviate that problem.

Cheers, that probably explains the differences in feel and sound. I think there is less of a noise from the power steering as well? Overall it does seem slightly more refined...
