Offline | I'm on my third and the cars only done 22,000 miles, i much prefered my old midland gears box in my previous one even though it wouldn't go into first or reverse sometimes. This gertrag box just sounds so agricultural. ![]() |

![]() :: 32mpg woo! :: | I've had no problems with the Getrag box in either of my MINIs: - 2004 MINI Cooper, 17k miles. - 2004 MINI One Convertible, 11k miles. Reverse can be a bit tricky at times but popping it in first and then into reverse seems to help ![]() The Midlands box in my first MINI didn't even last 10k miles before going pop! |

Online | Reverse selection on Getrag 5-speed 'box If when you go to select reverse you feel resistance half way into the gear, don't force it in as you will get in inevitable 'crunch'. Instead, when you feel the resistance, hold the selector there and slowly release the clutch. You will feel a point around the bite where the gear just slides in without the need for selecting first and trying again. |

Offline | Mine seems fine, though my Cooper is only a May 2006 build. However, it is rattling and has been from day one. The dealer tells me this is normal, but I'm not convinced. I will be taking it back in at some point... ![]() ![]() |

Offline | HI.. Feb 2005 build, had the improved clutch assembly fitted under warranty at 5k, car has now done 13.5k. The updated clutch assembly made the entire drivetrain smoother to the point where it felt like a completely different car. Gearbox gets better as the miles pile on, it's not noisy and the shift is positive and notchy just like a sportscar should be. Don't really have any issues with the reverse selection, if I feel resistance I just release the clutch put it back in again and it goes into reverse without any problems. Overall, after a year of ownership and around 10k of driving I think the Cooper is fantastic for a naturally aspirated 1.6 and I love the Getrag box. Cheers, Geoff. |

Offline | HI.. The improved clutch assembly came into place in the last quarter of 2005 I believe so yes a 2006 car would have this. It was a PUMA from BMW - symptoms were general roughness/vibration and apparent noise from the thrust bearing with the clutch released. It was listed as "replace in the event of customer complaint". The difference was very obvious, like I said almost like a different car, smoother and peppier, as power would obviously be lost through a rough drive train. Proved one essential fact to me - we pay a lot of money for these cars which is ok, but you must insist/demand (if necessary) that every warranty issue no matter how small is dealt with. I'd love to know how much money BMW save in terms of complacent customers who either can't be bothered or feel intimidated when it comes to warranty issues that are never addressed.. Cheers, Geoff. |

Offline | I agree with you Geoff - puruse everyhting preferably in writing. I asked BMW (in writing) if there were any known issues/problems with the gearbox installed in my car - no reply! But I have not forgotten my request (from March 06) and shall remind them when I go in for the first service. |
