Just found today

Just found today, if the fuel needle is in red the air conditionning doesn't work. Put fuel in the tank and the air conditionning works again.....

It takes energy to run the AirCon unit, which is drawn from the engine. This increases petrol consumption. So the MINI cunningly disables the AirCon when the petrol in the tank goes below a certain level. It will work again when you fill up.

That sounds totally stupid. I'm on my 2nd mini and have an r56 and have never experienced that. You can usually drive a good 30 miles when the red light comes on. Who wants to sweat to death while looking for a petrol station. I usually drive for a quite a while when the red light comes on

I would imagine the 30 miles is reduced if your Air Con was running. I try and not let my petrol get as low as that, I've heard its not very good.

You let it run that low? That's not good for your engine as it will end up sucking up the sediment which deposits at the bottom of your fuel tank. I always try to fill up when my car has a quarter of a tank left.

Oh definitely! Running the air conditioning can reduce the fuel economy by around 5 mpg because of the extra engine power required to run it.
