He says that he's allready got the 'old style' xenons in his car, so the new ones will just be plug and play. The headlamp washers and height adjustment sensors will allready be inplace.

The problem comes when you plug xenon lights into a car with halogen lights.

Do you have first gen xenons on your car too? If so I would have thought you can swap to facelift xenons with no problems what so ever. There is even a price for the upgrade in the MINI brochure.

James.

I have xenons, but dont know which gen.. how can I find it out?

This retrofit kit. what actually it changes?

In my country, I've got only 1 bmw dealer, and there are about 4-5 Mini cars.. so they cannot tell anything to me, only price and I need to wait for about 2 weeks.. that's why I am asking and finding info here

Sorry for the delay in replying. I can never keep track on which threads I have replied to, it’s a nightmare.

Hi,

Well if you have xenon’s, then you will have no problem switching to the 2nd gen lamps.

The retrofit kit includes the new lamps, you use the existing wiring, headlamp washers and self levelling sensors. Just to clarify the pictures below show which gen is which.

1st gen:

2nd gen:

Does this help?

Ok, well if you have halogen lamps then officially BMW will tell you that the xenon lamps cannot be retrofitted. It won’t matter which generation halogens you have.

From what I can understand this is because for xenon’s (and indeed HIDS) to be legal, you need headlamp washers and self levelling sensors, to prevent the blinding of other road users.

I know people on here have fitted xenon lamps to cars originally with halogens and in most cases they work fine, but the fact is that they are still illegal without the rest of the kit, and would probably fail an MOT or roadside check by VOSA. I think some people have also had to get their ECU’s reprogrammed to stop the lights flickering.

If BMW would supply the lights and the washers / self leveling sensors then I suppose you could then fit them legally, but it would no doubt be mega expensive.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about the 51 models and a change though?

Regards,

James.

Okiro - If you have headlights like that in the first pic (silver MINI) Then they are not xenons as you dont have washers on there.

If you do have washers then without a doubt you can swap your headlights for the gen 2 style without any problems!

If yours are not xenon then i really would not bother as it would be way to expensive as James Mentioned.

Anyone reading this, you can actually get non-xenons with washers on them (you can tell between them because the xenons say it in the lamp in the smaller circle, and they have an igniter box underneath the lamp, the halogen lamps with washers don't), they are few & far between but you do get them , sorry, no pics .

I have seen people fit the xenons in cars that were originally fitted with halogen lamps, but as stated the factory fitted xenons have self levelling sensors fitted to the suspension and the whole kit would be hard to fit, In one of the accessories booklets (from BMW) it actually has a upgrade to the newer xenons and there is a document that shows the retrofit kit but even this doesn't have all the self levelling sensors although it does have the washers and it also says up-to 09/03 cars need the Body Control Unit changing .

Not sure it's actually illegal though, there are plenty of kits out there for normal headlights to change them to xenons and most of them just work of the levelling switch already fitted to cars with halogen lights, (I may be wrong )

Mine's the one on the left.
