JCW Sound Kit Air Filter

Does anybody know at what frequency the JCW air filter should be changed or cleaned.
It was'nt done on the last service and the car is 3 yrs old and has now covered 26.5k and I think it should require attention by now.

Cheers

Officially they don't change the air filter until you get to Inspection II at about 50K miles.......(Outside of TLC cover of course )

Will probably need done long before that. My standard one was filthy when I got the car at 35K and I changed it myself. I seem to remember reading somehwere that the Sound Kit element is basically a Pipercross filter and that it can be cleaned and reused. Might be wrong though.......

Yes the sound kit filter can be cleaned and reused. Will probably need cleaning at the sort of mileage you are talking about.

Don't have anything official. My soundkit air box was replaced with the JCM cone filter some time ago but if I remember correctly it's something along the lines of.
  1. Stand at the front of the car looking at the engine bay. The sound pipe from the air box runs into the bulkhead/firewall. Pull off the rubber sealing strip that runs along the top of the bulkhead and over the sound pipe.
  2. Make sure you are happy how the sound pipe connects to the bulkhead, (it just slides over it). Lift this end of the sound pipe out, it will pivot aroung the point were it enters the airbox.
  3. Remove the small fabric filter that is on the end of the sound pipe, this can be washed.
  4. Unscrew two screws located in the right hand corners of the airbox cover. Be careful with the rear one as I've lost this a couple of times, has a habit of falling into the engine bay.
  5. Again looking at the car form the front there is a large rubber pipe which enters the airbox from the left. This is held on by a clip. YOU MAY NOT NEED TO REMOVE THIS PIPE, TRY STEP 6 First. If the pipe does need to be undone this clip is easy to undo by sliding a screwdriver under the bit of the clip that snaps together. Difficult to explain as the clip is not like any other i have seen.
  6. With all of this undone the airbox cover should slide to the left. Hey presto. Air filter just pulls out.
  7. Fitting is all in reverse. The clip on the large rubber hose will need a set of pliers or similar. One side basically snaps over the other.
I believe the filters can be washed with soapy water. If holding it under a tap, don't have the tap on to strongly and make sure the filter is dirty side down so that you are not forcing debris through it. Let it dry thoroughly, and don't put it next to any radiators or anything like that.

Hope this helps, sorry it is all from recollection, and in my old age I'm getting forgetful.

If you have a Haynes manual it is just the same as changing the normal filter really. But with the added sound pipe bit which is easy.

Many thanks, that is extremely useful
