Security

Can anyone suggest any mechanical security devices for use with the MC ?

My dealer assured me that the factory immobilisor has been used by BMW for 8 years, and has never been bypassed. This I find hard to believe, so am considering a supplemental mechanical device.

Any suggestions ?

i've had one of these for a few years now & (touch wood) my car's not been nicked so far...

£80 in Halfords. Adjusts to various wheel sizes & the idea is it flops around loose so you can't steer with it

Looks good, heard good reports about them before. Assume it fits OK with a multi-function steering wheel ?

I had a Ford XR2 nicked before with alarm, crooklok and gearstick lock on, so would like to find something a bit more effective!

not sure about the fit to a mini wheel - i'm still waiting for mine. Any Halfords should let you try it first though. These are supposed to be a lot better than crooklocks as they cover the entire wheel. I hope it fits in the boot!

I've seen a couple of MINIs with the enormous Yellow steering wheel thing, but was wondering :

a) Does it scratch the leather steering wheel?
b) Where do you keep it when it's not on the steering wheel?

Is it true that the United Kingdom has the highest rates of auto theft in all of Europe?

If so, has the theft rate increased with the Chunnel opening? Islands generally have a low auto theft rate. (In Hawaii, most stolen cars end up in chop shops.)

There's a scary high number of cars stolen each year in UK that are never recovered. Remember that next time you buy a second hand car or car part!

I'm more worried about vandalism than theft where I live

Washy and I had just been discussing this recently and it's true, the immobiliser has not been cracked. These diskloks and similar gadgets are a waste of time, a professional thief will get them off in no time. OK, they deter the amaturs but they wont get your car anyway. The professionals get your keys and then take your car, check out the thread in general discussion by a guy in Leeds, they broke into his house, stole the keys and then the car. http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16949

I just posted here in the general discussions forum.

Halfords shield is good value and matches compared to the autolock one.

Hope this helps!

a) it shouldn't 'cos it's not a tight fit, it sits loose
b)in the boot, or on the back seat (but it tends to slide around a bit)

i think it comes with it's own storage bag now which stops it damaging anything else

I agree
The only thing to do is pay some attention to where you leave your car - well lit public places if possible - avoid the obvious dodgy areas and opportunities for it to be towed away ( which thankfully is quite rare)without drawing attention to themselves.

Look after those keys!
