New Cooper MPG?

I've had my car for a week. Driving conservatively, but my car computer shows consumption at 13.2 and ~14. What gives? Is this normal for a new Cooper? Mine is a CVT.

How many miles have you done. My cooper is 3 days old (310 miles)... The first 100 miles was very bad regarding fuel consumption, 15 mpg (us)... but it dropped to 25 mpg (us). This is with mixed driving (about equal highway and in city).

I'm expecting it to improve some more...to about 28 mpg.

A cvt burns more fuel than a manual tho.

Currently driving my Mini Cooper and having alot of fun! +10000 miles and counting. MC VR/W, man Airco, SS+, alarm, profile leather, sportseats, spoiler, radio boost, chrome pack, white racestripes, 16" 5 spoke rims,

After 1100 miles (driving in mind you so no high revs) I'm averaging about 29,5 mpg (us)...

The boardcomputer is a bit off tho... when it says I've got only 25 miles left... I refuel and have on average about 8 liters still in the tank (about 1.8 gallons).

1st two fill ups for me (41.5mpg and 37.5 mpg) - still running in and not used > 4500 yet....well just once or twice to 5000 :-)
Daily consistent trip of 25 miles each way to work 50% city work and 50% A roads....I'm happy.

paulg - try reseting your the fuel consumption counter (by holding down the button until you see --.- ) The computer will recalc based on your current driving patterns, assuming you're on the move.
I just came back from a road trip, and averaged about 30.5 mpg highway (@75-85 mph), mostly cruising in "D", but at times in "SD" and steptronic. Filling up with 93 or 94 octane juice. So far 2500+ trouble free miles in less than a month!

We're getting something more than 33mpg overall with our unmodified Cooper CVT (urban use around Seattle, with highway trips). Driving for mileage can produce 38+mpg (I've had many 42mpg trips). The best I ever got was on a drive [downslope!] from Snoqualmie Pass to Issaquah, WA which recorded 75.4mpg!

I tried using 35 litres by driving the car easy, keeping it under 3000rpm. For my next 35 litres of petrol I drove the Mini as I wanted, using the revs nice and freely. I done a mix of town and motorway driving in both cases. I managed 6 miles further going easy on the throttle. Not exactly a staggering difference . Can't remember the exact mpg but it was a fraction over 30mpg. My car has just under 4000 miles on the clock.

The lesson I learned from this is to *** driving the mini easy as it don't make a great deal of difference.

Need a car that keeps me happy for more than 3 months!!

Another point: There is a "sweet spot" in all of this where speed (ground covered) is balanced by throttle position (sipping that fuel).

Because of the MINI's shape, the high end of this little mileage speed window is very sharp and mileage deteriorates rapidly (above 65mph I'd say). The lower end is less clear to me, but I don't think it's very slow (because you don't cover enough ground). The lower end may be 50mph or so.

In other words, the best mileage figures are a steady throttle between 50 and 65mph.

Opinion?

the wife has had her CVT for 15 months... only 8500 miles, she averages between 30 - 32... rarely drops below 30... unless I'm driving! She is pretty easy on it...

That's a "spike" (aberration) in the reading. Maybe under ideal conditions you could even do better than that .... over a 1/4 mile distance, but these spikes are to be disregarded.

Steady and smooth gets over 30 on a 49 mile trip, Goin for it, shortens journey by 10 minutes, but economy goes to 21.

Car at 890 miles, I worked out that I am getting 35.56 MPG! Not bad at all, mind you I am still running her in. That was a mixture of Motorway about 100 miles and going into work and back in town (12mile round trip) and a fantastic blast to Tarbet on the West Coast of Scotland round some of the fastest twisties you are ever likely to see!

Can't wait to get it down to 21 mpg when I am up at 7000 rpm.

All figures follow are US standard

0 to 4500 miles ------ averaged 22.6mpg
4500 to 6000 miles - averaged 29.8mpg
6000 to 8000 miles - averaged 29.7mpg

All three breakdowns are a mixture of the same driving style. The drastic change between the first and second breakdown I attribute to my MINI finally breaking-in. After 4500 miles I have never seen lower then 27.8mpg even during ralleyes of hard driving and staying above 4500rpm all day. The third breakdown was done formyself since I wanted to know if adding a cold air intake (in my case the K&N Typhoon) made any difference to mpg figures. As you can see it doesn't.
All I can say is if you are getting bad mpg figures to start with on a new MINI ... wait ... It should get better once everything is settled in.

Side Note: My OBC consistently reads 2.4mpg lower then my manually calculated figures.
