South Africa I dont' quite know what to do...

Guys, I need advice.

I ordered my MC PS/B in June 2004, where after I sweated it out until 23 Sept 2004 to take delivery.

I have loved and Idolized my Mini since I ordered it. I had to opt for the MC as the insurance for a MCS was R2300 a month, where my actual car payment is only about R900 more than that. I thought it absolutely ridiculous to pay about the same insurance premium as my car payment. On the MC the insurance is only R900.

I had spec'd my car very nicely with Nav, Auto Air con, Sun Roof, Chili Pack etc.

Now that I have turned 25 in December, my insurance premium on a MCS will be about R50 more than what I pay on my MC.

I really want the MCS, would really love the extra power, and to be honest I often feel a little inferior when pulling up next to a MCS even though it may not always have all the extras.

Obviously I will loose out on quite a bit of money should I trade my MC in now and order a MCS, but my butt is really itching. I was considering keeping both but financially it is not viable. I remember when I sold my first classic Mini, i regretted every second of it and am scared that I will feel the same.

Any advice out there would really be appreciated.

United-States Personally I think...

might want to seek professional help. If you feel inadequate just because a more powerful car pulls up next to you then you have more serious issues than just the lack of power. Me? I'd stick with the mini and just have fun. MCS envy is something only those going through puberty should worry about.

I wonder how different the response would have been if you posted in the Cooper S forum...?

I have a cooper s and I love the power that it has...but I have to say....my all time favourite feature of the mini is how quick I can take it around a corner....now whether or not you have a Mini One or a JCW MCS, this is one constant that all mini owners can enjoy...

The other thing is, the mini is also a bit of a poser car (kick and scream as much as you want guys - you know you love it when people stare and point at you when you drive down the street! )...and the average punter wouldn't know the difference....all they'll see is a lovely new mini....

So....enjoy your pride and joy - at least for long enough to pay respect to the fact that you have invested your time and money getting the car in the first place...

...even better: give it a name!, and then suddenly selling it will feel like parting with a good friend....

Great post and sage advice.

Sure, the S has more poke, but at the end of the day if you worry about that kind of thing...

oh...and I forgot to add....

do you know that all MCS owners secretly wish they had JCW's?

Just like Porsche boxter owners wish they owned 911 Turbos.....

Well then I must have only hit puberty at 25...
Being young... wanting to be faster than the car next to you...

It does not all go about feeling that I have an inferior MC to a MCS. I think the look of the MCS is also a lot nicer. There have been so many discussion around this on these forums.

In the end, if one loves a Mini, you will love any Mini...

Maybe this all just boils down to human greed. Wish I could have both or more

Thanks for the advice so far.

Wow! You didn't have the Cooper for very long!

I see that you didn't go for the satnav the second time around. At least you will get the speedo in the right place and it's worth making the change for that alone!

Agreed, about the speedo. I won't say it out to loud, but IMHO I think the SatNav was the biggest waste of money. It adds nothing to the resale price of the vehicle, I hardly ever use it and it takes away the original speedometer. I think that if I was in a career that required me to be on the road continuously, it may have been more beneficial.

Unfortunately in South Africa we do not get the option to put in the radio nav. I would have preferred to go for that option.

JaysToy...

Your insurance is R900 per month??? How did you manage that??? Mine is only around R330 with one of the biggest insurance companies, not one of these 'cut the middle man out' ones. Last year, whilst I still had my old Cooper, I had it fixed (major stone chip incident) without any hassles. Was fixed within 2 weeks after the 'accident'.

And good luck with the waiting!

South Africa Yes, your insurance is mad!

I am 23 (I bought my MCS when I was 22) and I pay R670 per month insurance - I also want to know, how the heck did you get R900? Sounds like you're getting ripped off! And of course, only reason why I pay my price, is because I am under 25 - after which, it will substantially drop.

It seems to me that it's only the MCS crowd who denigrate the MC as being 'underpowered", but rarely, if ever, do you hear MC owners complaining about it.

I am still very glad that I opted for the MC so that I could better afford more goodies.

I also prefer getting the best fuel-economy of all Coopers, with my manual transmission MC.

I have ZERO envy of MCS owners. Yeah, I could have sprung for one too, but it's just not necessary, as others have pointed out here:

I have the same look, the same cornering ability and 90% the same everything else, but my MC is very loaded -- just the way I wanted, and I would have had to pare down considerably my options had I sprung for the MCS. Also, my insurance is probably a lot lower because of it.

I was jealous of the MCS's Hyper Blue color option, but now MC's can get it too -- and I did!

No complaints and no regrets (so far).
