United-Kingdom Cooper D mpg

Hi, new to mini ownership and the forum so would like to say hello to everyone.

Having taken delivery of my Countryman Cooper D in December and having covered approx 1000 miles since then I was wondering what MPG (UK) I should be expecting as currently averaging below 40 :-(.

Hopefully the weather will improve so I can give it a good clean and detail, will post pics when that happens.

Thats not great for a car thats supposed to do 64 mpg on the combined cycle. Now I know 64 will probably never ever be achievable in real world situations but I was expecting over 50mpg on average or there abouts.

It's costing me nearly the same as my preivous car which was a lightly modified VAG 2ltr turbo petrol :-(

MPG aside I am really starting to enjoy the car, it's not to bad to drive, has decent torque and is a nice place to sit on a journey.

Interesting about the fuel economy, I wonder how it associates with paying attention to gear change indicator. I've driven 3 Cooper D's and for all 3 at 30mph on the flat the indicator was indicating change up to 4th but for my money the engine labours a bit and 3rd is more appropriate!

How long is the 'run in' period? In my PSA diesel Cooper D hatch it seemed to take ages!

Maybe you should find out if BMW diesels have poor consumption during the run in period.

Woah! Averaging under 40 for the front wheel drive cooper D aint great. While i dont have a D model, my Cooper S All 4 (250 miles on the clock) is averaging 37.8 MPG.

All MINI countryman models have a 1200 mile run-in period (according to the handbook). My previous mini (Cooper S hatch) took about 10k miles to "fully" run-in before I started seeing the full MPG potential (starting off at 36 MPG and increasing to 43 MPG). Not sure that really helps you as this is a petrol car, not diesel (although the run-in period is the same).

I have an ALL4 Cooper D, had it for 2 weeks and I'm getting 40.5mpg. This has been a mix of urban and motorway driving, done just over 500 miles. Hopefully this will get better once I pass the 1200 mile running in period.

Response from my Dealer regarding mpg Cooper D

In my experience and more so with the diesel; the vehicles fuel economy will gradually improve other the first 5,000 miles. It will be impossible to achieve the published figures as these are achieved under strict test conditions specified to the whole motor industry by the EU. A useful statement from the owner’s manual which may help to identify why your MINI is achieving below your expectations:
**
“Fuel consumption is determined according to a standard test method (93/116/EU).* It is not the same as the average fuel consumption in practice, which depends on many different factors such as driving style, load, road condition, traffic density and flow, weather, tyre pressures etc.* Engine power output and road performance data are measured in the conditions laid down by 80/1269 EU and DIN 70020 (with the car to standard specification). This standard specifies the permitted tolerances.* Additional equipment on the car may have quite a significant influence on both performance and fuel consumption, since it usually affects the car's weight and c value (drag coefficient), for instance roof rack, wider tyres, additional mirrors, etc”

I suspect my 17" run flats aren't helping my mpg.

Not a Countryman, but my Cooper D hatch is now a week and a half old (300 miles on the clock) and I've just done my first fill-up. OBC was showing 47mpg and my rough brim-to-brim maths (dividing mileage by number of gallons I put in) showed 44mpg which are both some way off the claimed 74mpg.

I put it down to the time of year, the engine being fairly tight and me being a little exuberant with my right foot at every opportunity but I suspect that the engine will loosen up significantly as the miles pile on and the mpg should improve, especially as the warmer weather comes.

I also agree with the comments above about the gear shift indicator which can sometimes get a little carried away!

Chris

Stop/start doesn't work in the cold either.

My CooperD All4 = 45mpg mixed driving 300 miles on the clock. The gear change indicator seems a little optimistic in wanting a higher gear, the engine appears to labour at times (especially going uphill) if the these gear change recommendations are followed, this can't be good for fuel economy or 'running in' surely?
