I'd love to buy the winter tyres with the wheels, but I can't afford £600 on that now, and then another £300 for new tyres for the front (as they're down to 4mm and don't really have any cross tread left at the sides) in about 2 months and then another £300 for new tyres for the front in another 2 months (as they're down to about 5mm and only have a little bit of cross tread left).

I think that I'll soldier on and make the investment towards the end of this year, once I've recovered from the purchase of the car

£600 includes 4 steel 16in wheels fitted with winter tyres - Blizzaks in my case.

They may not look as pretty as alloys but I'm more interested in my safety and mobility - and the safety of others if I couldn't stop before hitting them.

Sorry, I've re-read my previous post and have realised that it wasn't clear. The current 'summer' tyres on the car are pretty low on tread, so even if I got the £600 winter wheels and tyre set then they'd only be on for about a month before I have to put the wheels with the summer tyres back onto the car, and then spend another £300 to replace the front summer tyres (but putting the wheels with the new tyres on the rear) and then the current rear summer tyres would probably need replacing in another two months which would mean another £300.

I can afford replacing the front summer tyres within the next month or two and then doing the same with the rears, but adding £600 on top of it for something that I may use for a month and then would sit in the garage (with the rubber deteriorating?) until next winter doesn't make much sense to me.

If the weather gets really bad then I can just get the train to work (it just takes 3 times as long as driving).

Thanks for the links to the pictures. The guy in the parts place showed me a picture of black steel wheels for the £600 set - did you have a choice of black or standard 'silver' steel wheels when you got yours?

Chris

No. I just specced the winter set as an additional option when I ordered the All4D - without any choice of wheel colour or winter tyre. But I'm very happy with the performance so far on frozen snow and ice; we haven't had sufficient depth of snow yet to be able to say how they work as a 'snow' tyre substitute.

(My dealer delivers and collects whenever I want to swap over as I have sufficient garage space not to need to pay him for storage - and does the swap foc while I'm there for an oil change or whatever.)

BTW, it's good to hear that you're planning to put your new pair at the rear; so many people put new ones on the driven end and risk spinning out of control due to the unbalanced grip.
