Though "Mini brand going for Dakar win" might be more accurate, since I think the only part of the Dakar racer that is shared with the Countryman is the headlamps - everything else is custom race vehicle by X-Raid.

At least when the same vehicle with a different body was called a BMW X3, it did have the same BMW-based engine it has now.

Supposed to be a MINI Countryman bodied X5 with twin turbo diesel. Still represents the MINI brand I would think. All race cars are modified to some extent that makes them not really the model it is. Even my 03 Cooper S is moded out to not be a MINI Cooper S or JCW, but with power adders and suspension tweaks to not be stock, but still classified as a MINI. Sure makes Robby Gordon whine!!!! though!

MINI placed 1st, 3rd, and 4th in Rally DAKAR. The modified MINI Countryman of Stephan Peterhansel won the DAKAR by 44 minutes over Toyota Truck. This makes the 6 Rally win in cars by Stephan and his 11th overall. Robby Gordon still whines about being fastest but came in 14th.
