Corroding wheels.

My SD has the 18" split rims, you know the ones with black outer, polished rim and grey inner.

As they are so visible I like to keep them clean, even the insides. My car is just over 12 months old with only 6000 miles on the clock. So imagine my shock to find that the inners of the wheels are starting to corrode quite badly. The corrosion is starting from their joint with the black outers and is travelling under the paint.

I've been back to the Dealer and they took pictures which they'll send to Mini. Am hoping for new wheels. Although the type I have look nice I think I would prefer a once piece wheel.

So if you have split rims check them for corrosion.

Its all down to the corrosive brake dust and of course road salt this time of year, its bound to get right into any recess/joint and cause havoc.
Unless youre prepared to religiously take them off and clean them after every trip I would think its going to be hard to stop it.
A stone chip to the lacquer/paint and it doesnt take long before the corrosion gets in and starts to lift it off.

Oh No Not Again ! I had split rim wheels on my mini cooper S 58 plate and my split rim wheels started to corrode around the sliver rim. Be very careful what you use to clean them and NEVER use acidic wheel cleaners they will destroy your split rim wheels over time. I did take mine back to the mini dealer when my car was about 2 and a half years old and they did replace all the wheels but only like for like. They will only replace the wheel if there is no stone chips or damage from kerbing. When cleaning the wheels only use car shampoo or a good cleaner like maguires all wheel cleaner which has no acid in the product and I did check with meguires if it was safe on split rims.. But be very careful of other wheel cleaners as many of the products say not to be used on split rims in the small print ..

I do only use car shampoo to clean the wheels. Lets see what Mini come up with. Bear in mind the car has done just 6000 miles. What are they going to look like at three years old?
Split rims are a waste of time. If they replace with similar wheels then after 12 months I'd expect to be knocking on the dealers door again.

Isn't countryman covered by 12 years anti corrosion warranty?

Exactly the same problem with my same wheels. Looks awful and annoying when looking after them with correct products!

it's not just a mini problem, it is a split wheel problem

leave the split wheels to the racers, use 1 piece wheels for street / daily driver use

I didn't have a choice, wanted to downgrade to turbo fans or even 17" but they were charging £1000 to do that!

If yours are going the same way and it's still in warranty take it back. Its what you paid for.

Well Mini have agreed to replace the wheels. I have decided to go for one piece wheels instead, as if I agree to more of the same I'll have the same problem in another twelve months.

Have picked some Works wheels which look very nice but as they are one piece they work out cheaper than the split rims. Just waiting for them to arrive in stock.
