Countryman a good fit for me?

I currently have a Jeep Liberty going on 10 years. As an LBC owner of an MG Midget I'm thinking it might want some something next to it to keep it company at night and speaks proper English. So I'm wondering if this might fit the bill. A few questions though.

Size. Big for a Mini, but that means??? How does it really compare to the small SUV class like the Liberty, Rav4, etc.

Gas Mileage. Actually think my Liberty has been a great car, hate the 19mpg. Seems to be lots of controversy over MPG ratings. Have they straigtened that out? Within the past year or so I think it was Hyundai that actually had to send checks back to people for mispresenting MPG ratings in the US. Maybe this encouraged more realistic numbers?

Fuel type. I believe regular is out, but from there is it midrange (89) or high(91) in the US market. This really just plays into the gas mileage bit as on a 12gal tank that's like 40miles or so taken off in comparing my fuel costs compared to something that uses regular.

Transmission. I like standards, but to be honest I'm wondering if 6 speeds to go through can be a drag. I'm guessing 6th is for the highway, but for cruising around town whats the sweet gear you typically find yourself in? How does the flappy paddle compare for 'funness'?

Servicing. Unfortunately the closest Mini dealer is about 20-25 miles away. Will BMW or other dealers service?

Towing. Can they? I don't do much, but i do need a pull a trailer for trips to the dump, home depot (or is that redundant ), etc. I may be getting a small 10-12' bass boat for fishing, but my trips would be very limited distance wise to within an hour.

The Coles notes version:

Size is about the size of a VW golf, interior and exterior. Mileage is about 25-28MPG combined. Fuel recomendation is 91 (high-test) ... they do not recommned anything else. 6-spd is the most entertaining way to go but it seems you may have no experience ... learn the stick or pay $1200 for the slushbox. Servicing must be done at MINI dealers, unless you want to trust others who know very little about it. Towing is not recommneded but I believe I've seen others tow up to 1000lbs.

Best thing you can do is take one for a test-drive! Good luck!

Golf 4 door gti is one of my other options so though I'd like something a tad bigger it's still within the size. 8MPG better than my current at .40c more a gallon for gas doesn't really thrill me though.

I have no problem with a stick, but I have the Midget to tool around in when the weather is warm and sunny if I don't need to carry anything. So while I'm looking for a fun car, it doesn't have to be my primary fun car.

And my clutch knee is starting to creek a bit when it moves I think I'm about the same age as my father when we were stuck for 4 hours crossing the Throgsneck bridge over 4th of July one year. That was the last standard car he had.

Of course all this can change with the test drive. Hopefully the nice weather kicks in permanently soon.

The VW GTI is on my Top 5 list too: more power, more torque, more reliable, more value and cheaper to maintain ... not that this translates into more entertainment. The thing is, Golfs and GTI's are everywhere and strangely my left side of the brain seems to be getting a beat-down by the right side. I really don't think I could buy the logical choice, the GTI, even though it is a better vehicle.

Take a test drive and be prepared to fall in love ...

Everyone knows a MINI but you see an Audi, Golf or whatever and you think whats that, a Nissan?, they dont stand out from the crowd like a MINI does.
Of course Fiat have now bought out a big version of the 500 the 500L I wonder if any MINI folk will go looking at that one when they need a change?
