Aftermarket back-up camera?

Hi everyone! I don't have much experience with cars, so forgive me if I may sound a bit confused. I ordered (as a lease) a 2014 MINI Countryman. It's not going to be delivered for another few weeks (expected arrival date 4/16 in NYC), but I was wondering if anyone can help me out with an issue.

One option that I love and that is missing from the car is a rearview/back-up camera. It has back-up sensors, but I've gotten quite used to driving cars that have a rearview camera. I was hoping I'd be able to find a solution to this quasi-problem. The car does has a navigation/display (MINI Connected). I'd like the camera to connect to the display, but I don't even know if that's possible.

I was wondering if anyone knew if I would be able to have an aftermarket camera installed? Would it be possible to do so without making any major alterations to the car, so that I would just remove the camera (leaving no evidence behind) before I return the car at the end of the lease? Thanks so much for the help!

I know that they make aftermarket wireless cameras that you can easily install. The LCD screen has a suction cup that mounts to your windshield just like a radar detector or GPS, and the camera bolts on to the existing license plate screws.
I don't think there's any way to wire a camera into Mini Connected without modifying it and affecting your lease. It would be nice if there was some kind of input on it (but they want you to buy their camera package of course).

I don't know of any aftermarket backup option that allows hooking into the MINI Connected display, the ones I've seen actually replace the stock speedometer and display with a cheaper looking unit.

Yes but the MINI isnt really that long is it, not like reversing a 40ft container lorry, do you really need one or is it really just a gimmick?
Ive not seen anyone yet have a reversing beeper with voice announcer fitted to their MINI, maybe thats the next thing? "Warning this MINI is reversing", kind of thing.

Its all extra weight to carry around.

The US government is proposing to make back-up cameras compulsory for all vehicles in the next year or two - after all they have so many huge/high (insecurity-compensating) vehicles that not seeing pedestrians, particularly children, behind you is a real problem.

Given how many people seem to think they don't need to turn around and look behind them while reversing, it doesn't seem a daft idea. The Japanese have required rear-blind-spot mirrors for some time on MPVs, which you will have seen on imports.

And given the size/height of bonnet/hood needed on many US trucks (again, to compensate for the driver's insecurity?) meaning the road immediately in front of the truck can't be seen, it won't be long before they add a requirement for a forward-facing camera too......

There's an ongoing thread discussing how to add a back up camera to a Countryman over on the NAM forums if you are interested. The issue that started it was the high rear window blocking the view of little kids walking behind the car at a local day care centre. I'm thinking the rear view camera isn't a bad idea.

I own a new 2015 mimi cooper S coupe. If you have ever sat in a mini coupe you will immediately become aware of the blind spot when backing up. The rear side windows are tiny with a thick border of useless black dots making the window view useless. The rear window is small and is slanted, which cuts the view area more. I am going to mount the popular license plate camera. and a small monitor up front somewhere in an area down low in the cockpit. that location will pretty much solve the sun glint problems which most monitors are subjected to when in a high position. Perhaps I will mount it just forward of the shifter and down a ways. Any suggestions would be appreciated. NOTE: The coupe has no factory option. I just don't understand why. shubert1

I have an 03 Cooper S Hatchback and a 2011 Countryman S, neither have back-up cameras. Do know of blind spots and have accustomed myself to look around these spots. Noticed first when merging onto highway and did not see person that was not going to change lanes when I was merging. I, also, have a 2011 Land Rover with camera. When camera comes on it says: "Look behind before backing for safety", even with cameras you must still turn around and look.
