Poorest Dooper review ever?

"Let’s get something important out the way. The diesel Mini is no where near as good as the Cooper, S or even the One. But a small diesel will never (well maybe not never) be as good as a petrol equivalent so that’s not a fair comparison."

Each to their own I guess?!

Personally I think the character of the Dooper is far better than the One and better than the Cooper. It's amazing how the diesel noise and the simple fact it's a diesel seems to have ruined the D for the reviewer. Lets ignore the performance, the torque and pull, the economy... It's still a diesel.

I think the summary makes it clear the Dooper didn't stand a chance:

"Small diesels are notoriously crap. This one isn’t but it’s no where near as much fun as its petrol-powered stablemates"

I hafta say I had a diesel cooper for a couple of days and I was quite impressed with it. It was a world away from the old 2001 Clio DCi I owned a year ago. I also had a petrol R56 Cooper for 2 days, and IMO I preferred it slightly, but it was close. Still like my R53 Cooper S best of all though
That review does show how narrow minded some people are though. It really gets me annoyed when people hate things for no good reason.

I think Pocket Lint should stick to reviewing GPS systems and MP4 players and leave cars to proper motoring journalists. Mind you, I wouldn't choose a new computer by reading Autocar either.

I have changed from a 1st gen MINI Cooper S to a new MINI Cooper Diesel myself. There is no getting away from the fact that if I was asked to choose between the two as an all-expenses paid vehicle car, I would choose the Cooper S and enjoy having the extra bhp. But those halycon days of company motoring are long gone with all manner of taxes being determined by how green your car is. As a private motorist, I positively enjoy achieving an average 70 mpg on my motorway commute to work - it used to be 28 mpg in the Cooper S! The diesel is quieter than the Cooper S at 70 mph. The only time it makes a nasty noise is at tickover but the auto start stop sees to that very quickly as well.

But the most stupid statement of all is his "Small diesels are crap". I think the Dooper's engine is absolutely amazing. I still can't understand how I can cruise around town at 1000 rpm and generate sufficient torque to keep running smoothly, off turbo. If it was a great big 3.0 litre diesel engine, it would make sense but a small 1.6?

I rated the MINI Cooper diesel as 10/10 on their website. Strangely there was no way I could rate the reviewer...
