The images you see here are just part of a sequence of photographs which appear to reveal in details a prototype model for the future genration MINI hatchback. New MINI followers will instantly see a number of changes that while by no means radical in the context of the car design world, represent a bold move forward from the MINI design team.

You might be looking at a picture of the upcoming MINI-i MegaCity. Then again, you might not.

France's Automobile Magazine obtained this one photo of what could be the MINI-i MegaCity - a low emissions or zero emissions city vehicle. The SMART-style mini- or micro-car is part of BMW's Project-i initiative, designed to create a new line of affordable cars for urbanites.

An article we reported on several months ago from British pub AutoExpress hinted at the existence of such a vehicle. It is possible this new urban MINI-i could be a plug-in electric car, using the technology currently undergoing development in the MINI E.

There is also, however, a possibility that this leaked image is a revision of the current MINI.

We expect to learn more on this car as we approach the Frankfurt Auto Show this Fall.

I have been looking at buying a new Mini and have been told by dealers that they didn't expect a replacement model until 2013. I was surprised to read yesterday on the Autocar site and others that a replacement is due in only 2 years time.

If this was simply a facelift, it wouldn't bother me that much but if effectively it is a new Mini 3, I would be more concerned. I keep cars for some time and wouldn't like to feel that I have 'the old model' in such a short period of time. Do anyone think that 2011 is realistic or will the present model be around for longer?

The four headlight, angry-looking image looks like the Switchback concept from early 2000s, from before BMW's takeover. Could be wrong though.
