Offline | DOOM3 - freeeee meeeee! Now i picked this up at the weekend and starting playing it last night. my advice dont run it on anything slower than a 2.4ghz PC with a 256mb graphics card, its slow at those settings. Oh and update sound and graphics drivers is a must. anyone else playing it. given this game has a certificate of 18, ive gotta say its made me jump a few times.... infact its scared the bejesus about of me more than once Considering its essentially a remake of the original DOOM game (scenario) im seriously impressed. I think Half Life2 is going to have to go along way to beat it. One question anyone found the bloody night vision goggles yet.... it so dark i find im wandering round with torch on and frantically swapping to fire arms when i hear that very disturbing manic laughing...... its certainly been worth the wait i can tell you. ![]() |

Offline | I finished it the other night. Overall, I felt a little disappointed. The huge downside was the darkness. It never changes throughout the whole game! No night vision goggles Just a silly little torch that you cant use at the same time as a weapon. Pros were definately the scare scenes. On NUMEROUS occasions throughout the game, I threw the mouse up into the air and jumped off my seat, so completely startled. ![]() And the 'Hell' levels are simply incredible. Wow. Just wow. Overall, I feel what could have been a 100% game, is marred by darkness, that essentially hides some of the best graphics ever seen in PC gaming. And I feel it could have all been solved by weapons WITH lights, or a shoulder light etc...Back to Far Cry ![]() - Global Moderator - MY BLOG - Global Procrastinator - ![]() ... Offline | Ahh okay. Well, I wont spoil it for you then ![]() Labs were great to start with, but it gets a little repetitive after hours and hours of 'find combination, walk to door, get ambushed, go through door, find new combination, walk to door, get ambushed.....' see a pattern here? ![]() You've seen AvP eh ![]() - Global Moderator - MY BLOG - Global Procrastinator - ![]() ... Offline | I had the brightness nearly all the way up on the 17" LCD. Passable inside. Pure white on the Mars surface ![]() You wont have reached the bit yet, but theres one part of the game - quiet room, science lab thing - deadly silent. I turn my speakers up (Logitech Z680) few very quiet ambient noises in the background. Walk up to a preserved creature ....... hmmm... better not spoil it for you ![]() - Global Moderator - MY BLOG - Global Procrastinator - ![]() ... Offline | and im sure i can imagine the rest... im not a big fan of moments where u enter a long corridor, you hear a dodgy sound and all the lights gradually fail of into the distance, leaving that shorts filling moment of "ok?" thump thump, switch from shotgun to torch quickly and back whilst gradually moving forwards.... im starting to be able to talk about some of the horrors. glad that my therapy is helping..... somethings cannot be discussed, only shared with people who have been there.evidently which level of difficulty did u finish on? |

Offline | if u like online have u tried "enemy territory- ET" spin off from wolfenstien, very playable class based ww2 game MOH isnt bad, but its dated, just see "call of duty", protecting "pegasus bridge in france" and storming "stalingrad" its so realisic.... you cant beat "ET" for quality class based action....i just love going covert-ops and causing havoc behind enemy lines. ![]() |

Offline | The best scare of the game I just hate the lights going out in general. Everytime you enter a room. Lit up. Walk forward. Power goes out. Its cool the first few times, but gets annoying and predictable later ![]() Honestly though, the Hell levels were a real highlight of the game. Still dark, but so freaky. Marine When Ive got a few weeks to play it, I'll probably go back through on Nightmare ![]() - Global Moderator - MY BLOG - Global Procrastinator - ![]() ... Offline | problem with nightmare is the lack of ammo, u have to be quick and learn to dodge enemies saving ammo for essential only combat. also learning the route and not back tracking as u find that those corpses just wont stay down. i remember playing nightmare on doom2, it was like there was always an "arch-vile" where ever i went. screech and up pop all the corpses! |

| MINI2 Senior | Doom3 was a great experience imo. It does get rather repetitive in places but its worth slogging it out to see the Hell levels. It really has to be played alone, in the dark and with the sound cranked up for best effect. You should also up the difficulty to get the most enjoyable experience. As with every Id game, the story is basically non existant. Aliens with Big sharp pointy teeth are set to wipe out humankind, go kill em ! As far as graphics go, nothing to touch it yet (until HL2 at least). The level of detail is nothing short of amazing as long as you set up your gamma correctly. The most exciting thing really is the game engine though and as with most ID games its pretty much a technology demo enticing other companies to buy and use it. It has huge potential with Grey Matter and Raven already working on titles using it. Interesting that Raven who are more renowed for their story driven games, Thief, Hexen, etc are working on Quake4. For those who are too afraid to wander round swapping torch over for a weapon there is a mod available called 'Duct Tape mod' which basically as its name suggests straps the torch onto whatever weapon you choose. Here's a link to a site that has it along with many other bits and bobs. http://doom3.filefront.com/ One nice surprise was the sheer level of scaleability built into the engine. I know scooperman has already suggested no less than a 2.4Ghz with a 256Mb card but its not necessary if you are prepared to sacrifice a few niceties. You can easily get away with 1.7Ghz and a 128Mb card. Turning off AA and AF on older NVidia cards for instance, as with most games will see a huge hike in performance. It will even run on Nvidia MX cards which don't have hardware pixel shader support and essentially built on 6yr old technology. As long as you don't go into it expecting it to be the original Doom and instead a well scripted horror story you shouldn't be disappointed. I wasn't ![]() Stop ruddy rainin cos the 2nd Cam needs a thrashin ! |

| iPod. Do you? | As good as the graphics are, methinks tis only a very old *game*, redone with brilliant graphics. One cool idea (darkness and a flashlight, some atmospheric noises and sudden attacks) does not make a great game. Tired and hackneyed, I put it down after a couple of hours, having had my fill of the graphics. I might go back from time to time, but won't play it through. Pete |

Offline | I've been playing DOOM 3 since it's release, but only now and then. Very good graphics (3.2 p4, 256 Nvidia card, 1 meg ram), and scary in places! I too have been using the "duct tape" weapon light as well! I'm a UT2004 man. I play at lunch times at work on a LAN, and ocasionally play online at home. With the extra maps and stuff off the internet, my UT2004 folder is over 8 gig in size now!!! We used to have a small group off MINI2 that used to play Deathmatches in UT2003 on Sunday nights on a private server, but I lost touch with the server after upgrading to UT2004! Are you still out there guys? ![]() |

I've tried playing as the egyptians as i've completed the campiagn as the Juulii, but its bloody hard, as there base troops are wimpy compared to the romans Hastati...Must get a life... |

| MINI2 Regular | I got Doom 3 for my birthday, have to agree with you all, scares the living hell out of me! Especially the buggers which have replaced the green-fire-shooting-aliens, I run away from them. Anyone thought about setting up a Mini2 server and playing a deathmatch on a dedicated evening? Or have you got one already? *March 2003, Mini Cooper, Solid Black, White Roof, White Bonnet Stripes, Red Tartan Kaleido/leather, Chilli Pack, SSP, 6 CD Changer, Cassette Boost Bootiful!! - Now gone But still got the MINI spirit ![]() |
