It's only a publicity stunt for the Commission for Integrated Transport.
Their chairman, David Begg has conveniently forgotten that every driver has a vote, and that a party that finds itself backpedalling against the motorist may very well consider winding up the commision in favour of a more driver-friendly alternative.

Oh, and he doesn't make any mention of pollution by aircraft, which dwarfs the pollution made by road vehicles - and they pay no taxes for the privilege.

It's complete ********. Making the driver pay a £900 fee for the privilege of driving a car? Stupid...

It's the people driving around in their massive V8's and 3 litre motors that are causing the problem, so why would a £900 fee stop them, they can afford it. The single mother, or small family, with a 1.2 fiesta won't necessarily be able to afford £900, what will they do?

Car drivers are taxed enough, whether they drive clean cars or not. An extra tax on 4x4's and sports luxuary cars ia as appalling as putting it on clean cars. There is an informative article in this weeks autocar re 4x4's compared with other forms of polluters.

My parents are considering a car with a capacity of just over 3 litres in there next car, but that is not to say we could instantly afford a £900 tax.

Modern car engines are so much cleaner these days, the engine in the BMW 745 pushes out far less CO2 then the KV6 for instance. This is just another scam to get money.

I appreciate that drivers are an easy target for raising tax revenue whilst using the excuse that it's for environmental reasons. I also get taxed to death for the large company car that I use, when it's essential for carrying large and heavy loads and pulling trailers as an integral and essential part of my work.

However, I think we all need to take a well informed and serious look at some of the consequences of the motors that we choose. For instance, choosing the examples that you quoted:

Rover KV6 225g/km CO2
Rover KV6 auto 259g/km CO2
BMW 745 263g/km CO2

Let's face it if anybody was to do that, they would be hung, the motorists would finally snap!!!!! The cost of motoring is already high enough, but this is just rediculouse. If they want the climate change get the car makers to start pulling there fingers out and make better mor efficient engines. The new Mini engine is supposed to be more efficient and will have better fuel economy isnt it?

It's seems that all the goverment wants to do is make peoples life a complete missery, I dont wont to live in a world were I have to go on the buses or trains, I want my car!!!!

Oh buy the way Mr Blair ya a to**er!!!!

Oh! Maybe I meant a different engine. Your research shows me to be a little incorrect!! I will try and find where I read that fact, maybe it was an older derivative of the KV6, or in a different application.

On a different point is the 745, 263g/km CO2, actually a dirty car? At what point is there too much CO2 produced? Sure there might be many cleaner cars, but is this a case of being very clean in comparison to just, well, clean, or actually being a heavy polluter?

Would be interesting to know.

Found it! The KV6 engine in the Freelander produces 298g/km CO2, whereas the 740 is 267, and the 750 272. Typically the 745 has been replaced for these just as I state a number.

These were from the June 05 issue of Top Gear.

Just above the Freelander is the Lambo Murcielago. 500........

Nuff said really!!!

Actually, flying long haul (for example London-New York) produces about 110 g/km of CO2 per passenger, equivalent to some of the greenest cars. Short haul flights are more polluting - for example, on a flight from London to Glasgow, CO2 produced is about 180 g/km per passenger. A new MINI Cooper, by comparison, produces 166 g/km.
