CVT Drag Racing...

Well, I went to the drag strip earlier tonite....take a look at my times:
Run 1:
Reaction: 1.261
60ft: 2.894
330ft: 7.871
ET@ 594 ft: 11.146
1/8 ET: 11.868
1/8 MPH: 62.34

Run 2:
Reaction: 1.341
60ft: 2.909
330ft: 7.687
ET@ 594 ft: 10.879
1/8 ET: 11.586
1/8 MPH: 63.65

Run 3:
Reaction: 1.004
60ft: 2.806
330ft: 7.628
ET@ 594 ft: 10.870
1/8 ET: 11.593
1/8 MPH: 62.25

Run 4:
Reaction: 1.257
60ft: 2.896
330ft: 7.764
ET@ 594 ft: 10.999
1/8 ET: 11.714
1/8 MPH: 62.93

Run 5:
Reaction: 1.329
60ft: 2.791
330ft: 8.314
ET@ 594 ft: 11.888
1/8 ET: 12.654
1/8 MPH: 58.67

Run 6:
Reaction: 1.124
60ft: 2.816
330ft: 7.629
ET@ 594 ft: 10.850
1/8 ET: 11.565
1/8 MPH: 62.86

....needless to say, I'm a little rusty on the reaction time (that, and the CVT is a slow responder)

too bad the local track is an 1/8th MI.

Good data. I assume you were using the manual shift mode and not sport drive. If you have DSC did you try it both on and off? I think it might slow your launch when on. Finally, what tires were you running? Thanks.

Well, I dont have DSC. I used the sport mode and the steptronic mode (w/o shifting, I simply let the computer do the shifting) I felt no difference between the sport and steptronic modes. I should have taken note of what i did in each run. the 12.??? time was when I tried starting in 1st then putting it in sport mode. unfortunately I made the exchange in a messy fashion so i lost time...

The tires were Continental 15/175/65 size tires...i put the PSI up to 40 on the rear tires to reduce rolling resistance, and left the front to 32 since there would not be a traction problem with the boring launch

well, I havent drag raced in 2 or 3 years, and i dont have that much experience, but I'd say I could shave .5-1.0 second off my 1/8 mi time if I can figure out a way to really launch off the line....

I can't see that car having too much wheel spin. Taking 1.0 off the 1/8 mile I can't see......

I agree, I don't think you can spin your wheels like an S can off the line. You could try bringing the rpms up to 2500 or so, holding against the brakes, at the lights for a faster launch. The next big improvement would come from wider, sticky tires, like 205/50-15 Kumho or Hoosier. We autocross and track (but no drag race yet) our Cooper, the right tires can make a big difference.

if I don't have a problem with traction, putting bigger tires on my MINI will just add rolling resistance.

When drag racing, I put my right foot to the floor, with the left foot on the brake, once the yellow light goes on, I let off the brake for my launch. When doing this, it is still rather lethargic (the revs go only up to est. 2700 in this manner)

Do you have ASC or DSC ? If you do, you need to turn it off.......

No, of course I don't. I learned how to drive a long time ago instead.
