After initial teething problems, Double-Take Rallysport Triumphs in Doo Wop Rallies!
Seattle, WA – Double-Take Rallysport (DTRally) officially unveiled their New MINI Cooper in the inaugural event of the Western States Rally Championship (WSRC) – the Doo Wops 3&4 ClubRallies. This event was particularly momentous for the DTRally team in that it was the premier of the first rally-prepared New MINI Cooper in a SCCA Performance Rally. The team joined over forty other competitors who took to the forest trails of western Washington in this immensely popular event- known for its fast, flowing stages and fabled hard packed gravel roads.
Doo Wops 3 - The goal for the weekend was to learn the new car and its handling characteristics in preparation for future WSRC rallies. The brothers decided that finishing the rally was more important and focused on a slow-and-steady strategy rather than aiming for a podium finish. The team’s mettle was soon put to the test when the car suddenly lost power on the 3rd stage of the first day. Forced to pull over and unable to restart the car despite their efforts, the team was towed back to service where the crew at Cascade Autosport worked frantically to diagnose the problem. The crew traced the problem to the inertia switch and bypassed it, but because the MINI did not finish the previous stage under its own power, the team received a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the day. Although out of the race, the brothers ran the last few stages of Doo Wops 3 to gather more experience and seat time in the new car.
Doo Wops 4 - The second day of the ClubRally dawned wet and cold. The schedule for the day included runs up and down the famous “Brooklyn Tavern” stage- one of the fastest and smoothest stages of any west-coast rally and a favorite among the racers. Fortunately, the team left the teething problems of the previous day well behind them. With the car running smoothly and the brothers growing more confident with each stage, they were soon able to set competitive times against other Production-class teams. By the final stage, the brothers had cemented their position of 2nd place in Production for the Doo Wops 4- an outstanding finish for the team and the new car!
Throughout the weekend, the emotional response to the MINI from competitors and spectators alike was overwhelming. One spectator mentioned it was a resounding crowd favorite. “We knew we had a real eye catcher but we had no idea it would be so popular!” enthused driver Eugene Wong. “Once we worked out the gremlins on the first day, the car performed with aplomb and poise. This car was designed to rally! “
Double-Take Rallysport would like to extend a sincere thanks to Cascade Autosport for their outstanding work in preparing the car and in for keeping team in the rally; MiniMania for their support and technical assistance; and all the workers and organizers who made the rally the fantastic event it was.
