New Hoosier: A3S04 sizes, etc

At TireRack, the new Hoosier A3S04 is listed in
205-50-15
and
205-45-16

The 15 inchers are more costly !

Based on the widths of the old tires (a3s03) the 205/50/15's were significantly wider than the 205/45/16. Tread width of 8 inches compared to 7.3 inches

I guess you pay for the extra rubber

I like the idea of using the new tires, either the A3S04 or the Kumho 710 but I haven't seed a size I like yet....

Keith, I've already talked to Jeff Spear about the new tires and he said that all the sizes will be available before the season, it's just not right away. I've got a free pair of S04 215/40R16's coming, sometime in the begining of the year.

Although honestly, I may switch to the Kumho 710's if they come in a good size (haven't seen anything yet) simply for cost.

BTW, according to Jeff and the way I understand what he said, the tire is hardly different. It's a different tread pattern and stronger belts (steel/fiberglass, I believe) which is what allows the longer life. The tread COMPOUND is unchanged. The fact that the tire flexes less prolongs the life, not the compound.

I wish Kumho would give us a clue about the 710 size availibility for the upcoming season. I have to believe that someone must know if they will make a 16" V710 that will work on the "S". Anybody know?

Tom, somewhere, I've seen some of the available sizes, and unfortunately none of them jive.

Hoosiers

I went ahead and ordered the A3SO3's since they are $20 cheaper each it seems.

What is the de rigeur rain tire most use at Nationals that have a dedicated rain tire? I've been looking at the Bridgestone S02 and the RE950.

I'll be at 6 of the tour events in 2004 beginning with Phoenix Jan 24-25th. Hope to see some of you.

Keith and All, correction about what Jeff told me. That's been changed. And unfortunately, the 215/40R16 tire will not be available in the A3 or R3S04 until AUGUST! However, the 205/45R16 is supposed to be available in both the A3 and R3S04 right now.

I'm debating experimenting with the 225/50R16 with extra spacer again.

Augs, running the Hoosier Dirt Stockers would probably be first choice, or their new rain Radial that's supposed to be coming.
But if not those, I'd run a Toyo T1-S in a narrow size (205 or smaller) personally.
Keep in mind, I wouldn't pull out the street tire until there's A LOT of standing water.

All I ever read about is the Dirt Stockers...so I'm going to get those. I'll put them on the 16 inch R-84 x-lites.

I suppose MiniUSA is going to continue their 2003 Contingency program into 2004. Has anyone heard?

"no sizes available for this make and model"

Brian has Jefff ( I think that's the Hoosier rep?) told you when the new new radials might be available?

I won't need them for the Phoenix event, but want them before San Diego middle March.

I haven't actually spoken with Jeff about the rains. I just knew they were coming and when I did a search, the Tire Rack page came up.
It will be interesting to see the sizes available, but I think I originally heard that all the same sizes as the other radials will be available.

My new 215/40-16's A3S03's just arrived at the door step. Beautiful looking rubber. Looks like my first heat cylce on them is gonna have to be the Phoenix Tour event. I have 3 uncorded R3S03's left from last year and an extra set of 16" rims intended for the rain radials. I suspect for local events I'll try and use up what's left of the 205 R3's and save the A3's for the tour events. Except I have only 3 uncorded R3's. I suppose I could mount two of the 205 R3's on the fronts and the new 215's on the rear for locals.

It's nice to have options.

I also wonder that if the new rains are shaved if it might not make a better cold weather tire than the A3S04 because of the different compound?
