Question Diesel MINI?

Saturday, while flipping through the local newspaper for Taunustein, Germany (Die Aarbote) and looking at the "new cars for 2003" article, I came across two comments on the MINI. First there was a comment about the cabriolet and... a diesel MINI. There were, unfortunately, no details about either car. But a diesel MINI???

Apparently it will be using a Toyota diesel engine. I can't say that the idea of a diesel MINI appeals to me, but some might like it.

No way would they bring a diesel Mini to Canada. They don't even have the Mini One in Canada. The only car that I see regularly with a diesel would be the VW Golf TDi. Deisel will not sell here, not until the cost of a litre of fuel breaks the $1.00 mark will people here take them seriously.

Not quite my idea of "motoring on", either, but diesels do tend to "sip, not guzzle". I rented an Audi A3 with a TDI engine and it was a real autobahn flyer.

BMW stated that the diesel mini would be a stand alone model in the range and not a diesel engined version of present models. No details of trim or spec yet.

How about???

MINI OIL
or
MINI CAB
or
MINI YARIS
or
MINI HALF

I hope it's slower than the ONE
You never know though as some of these diesels are very quick especially once you get them moving.

I was actually toying with the idea of waiting for the Diesel, or at least changing to the Diesel when it comes out.
That was until I read the latest news a few weeks ago - similar to ONE spec, 1.4 litre engine, 0-60 in 14 seconds (!!!).

Before I got my MINI in October I drove a Vauxhall Nova 1.5TD for 5 years. I loved it to bits and it was very quick (0-60 in under 11 seconds).
To be honest it actually feels as though my Cooper is actually slower than my old Nova most of the time (although it isn't).
I certainly miss the fuel returns too - with right foot hard down constantly I could expect 50MPG from the Nova, I'd guess I'm getting nearer 30 in the MINI and that's driving like a Saint!

I wish they'd look into a 'hot' Diesel. I would swap my current MINI for a Diesel in Cooper spec with a decent Diesel engine (thinks Pug 306, VW Golf GTI Deisel etc...) as soon as one were to come available.

Ummm. You're obviously not very familiar with the MINI One, then. (0-62mph in 10.9s)

The 'ONE spec' bit was the only 'ONE' part of that post.
The 1.4 litre and 0-60 time were from what I've read about the Diesel specifically.

Sorry. It sounded to me like you were criticising the One.

Never driven one to be able to comment.

Actually, I think I will be finding out tomorrow...
My Cooper is due at the dealers for some warranty work and I'm being left with a courtesy MINI.
I'd guess it'll be a base model ONE (I work for a Vauxhall dealer and our courtesy's are base Corsa 1.0 12v's! ).

It'll be interesting to compare the ONE and my Cooper.
