Unhappy Is this normal?

Well Saturday morning 9:15 I collected my little yellow charm, and had to endure the 1 hour of the sales person showing me around the car - I just wanted to drive her!

But besides the car appearing to be perfect with no rattles, squeaks or lumps. I have a most perculiar noise from behind the dash.

It sounds like a fan running, about the same sort of sound as the heater fan on level 2. It starts when the ignition is turned on (but not started) and continues to run when the engine is started and until it is turned off.

The engine cooling fan is not running, and the heater blower fan is definately off - no aircon etc. Does any other diesel own have this noise? From the engine compartment it is right towards the very back, litterally in the dashboard.

Besides this, she is a pleasure to drive, and with 117 miles on the clock already has a lot more get up and go than I remeber from the test drive.

Yes is the answer, my Cooper has the same noise - a small fan running. It's apparently a 6" fan used to cool the power steering pump.

I thought the diesel had a different hydraulic PS system. Does it still have a cooling fan?

Petrol cars use an electrical PS.
Diesel has got a hydrolic PS like most other cars do.

Strange noise, haven't heard it yet.

Only time I get a noise like that is when I have my aircon on, which you haven't got!
Maybe a quick trip back to the dealer would clear things up?

Thanks for all of your thoughts, the dealer is due to give me a call tomorrow. I will let you know what the outcome is - hopefully not a new feature of the 04 models.

Yes mine does it as well, most noticeable with just ignition lights on , Sept build.
Thought it was something to do with the power steering.

Yes, mine does it too. I picked my car up on Saturday 1/11/03 and on Sunday it started making exactly the same noise and it doesnt go away!

I hope it can be fixed somehow. Anyone spoken to Mini about this yet?

With so many cars doing this maybe it's meant to happen.

Mine does it too along with gurgling noises like some fluid being pumped around, and this is before the engine has been started !

Minis talk and are human

That's why they gurgle when you turn the ignition on... 'cos they're happy to go for a spin

I have had Mango (as in Mango the Mini....sorry I just had to!) for 2 1/2 months and only noticed this same noise about a week ago.

Cant say it bothers me too much just a bit odd.

It's probably just the power steering pump!

You silly billys! I aint got my mini yet but iv been told its a fan thats on all the time to cool the radio system! bet its coming from the centre of ur dash board right? if not then i dunno, but when i had the demo i thought ther was a lot of wind noise but it turns out to be the cooling system for the radio and i "think" it can be switched off by ressing the button that circulates the air wothin the car instead of bringing inair from outside....

Unhappy

I haven't seen if this button turns off the fan like noise, but page 66 of my OneD manual says 'Do not maintain the recirculated-air mode for longer than for approx. 30 minutes, as otherwise the quality of the air inside the passenger compartment will deteriorate.'

Strange choice if this button does stop the fan, either put up with it or suffocate!!!!!!

I think an exploritory under my dash with a tourch is in order. Will post any findings of interest here.

That button won't stop the noise!
It just diverts the air intake from external to internal!
You can keep it on as long as you want...........just depends on what you had for tea last night!
