Offline | 54k in and the Hot start prob seems to be developing on mine on a regular basis. Seems to have got worse over last 1k miles! Will be calling dealer later so will be interested to see if they are aware of the problem. I will keep you posted! |

| Mini2 Regular | Inspection II Service has been completed, all went very well. Guy at PCS-MK said the car was in very good condition for having 95590 miles on the clock. Needs to go back to have some more work one. Front pads need to be changed, coolant and brake fluid change. Glad that it is all routine wear and tear maintenance and no major problems. Hot start problem, PCS ran a short basic diagnostic test on the car and it indicated that the DDE Main Relay was at fault. They will be giving me a quote later today for the part and labour, will keep you posted on the cost. Mini Newbie |

Offline | Mine has been checked now but diagnostics all showing ok. The fault occured all the time so going back on Tuesday when they have had time to delve into the archives! My ECU is bang up to date so the waiting game begins! Printed off main points from this thread for them to chew over as well. Still, worth the trip over anyway as picked up a set of 8 Spoke Alloys for £50 and saw the new JCWS! ![]() |

| Mini2 Regular | I'm prepared to be shocked at the price they come back with. Just need to decide if i get the work done or not. ![]() I very much doubt it causes any damage to the engine, would be mightily annoyed if i was to spend the money and it didn't fix it. Interesting if you look at the mileage on other peoples cars, mine started when it got to 92-93k, yours is on 54k have seen some others on here with 20k or less? Mini Newbie |

Offline | Had this diesel starting problem, too, for a while now. Finally took it to the dealer today to look at it along with another problem with the engine radiator fan not running and the a/c not working. I'd done some preliminary diagnostics, which showed that the fan itself was OK (Speed -I and Speed-II), so were all the fuses and control relays, leaving only the ECU. So far the bill is £609: a.) two hours of general fault-finding b.) to diagnose that the ECU will not allow the engine fan to work unless there is adequate refrigerant pressure in the a/c system. c.) to re-gas the a/c d.) reset the ECU (perhaps re-programme??) One would have thought that they would have known about (b.) and how the a/c system/ECU works without having to spend 2 hours checking things I'd already check, and informed them about. With regards to the starting problem, they have had an email from MINI UK to check the EGR valve and the accelerator linkage. This will be another £150, with no guarantee of success. This thread goes back to 2003 and it's surprising that in 5-years no real fix has yet been found for what appears to be a relatively common problem. |

Offline | Car was with dealers all day but still no cure. An injector needs replacing but they do not believe this is linked to problem. Probably going to leave the car with them for a week while on hols. To be continued.... |

Offline | Total bill came to £752. For the starting fault, they >>>> cleared the ECU fault codes >>>> installed the latest software >>>> Checked engine /DME wiring >>>> cleaned the EGR valve and checked throttle valve sealing (email to dealer from MINI UK) The last item (Exhaust gas recirculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) could, if not closing properly, cause this poor idling. Haven't had the chance to test the car, but they said it's OK now. We'll see..... |

Offline | I would be asking the dealer to persue a goodwill payment from MINI Warranty for that work!! This is now a well documented Inherent Design fault in the OneD !!!!! ![]() ![]() |

Offline | Cant believe you have shelled out over £700 on this problem - I feel sorry for you. ![]() I wouldnt hold out any hope as after three trips to the dealer mine is still doing the same thing - as has been said above, it seems like this is a design fault which seems to be unfixable. ![]() Make sure that if the fault reappears then you either get a full refund for the work, or you make them fix it FOC next time. |

Offline | No, the £750 included trying to find out why the electric engine radiator fan was not working as well as the a/c needing regassing. Apparently, they found that if the A/C gas pressure is low it disables the engine radiator fan altogether, (which is crazy, as the engine needs the fan in hot weather!). However, I had separately checked the engine fan itself, the relays and the relevant fuses and informed the service department beforehand that these were all OK and that the problem was either a due to faultcode blocking the system or the ECU itself. But, they insisted on checking all these items again and charging £200 for the tests. The thing is that I would have expected the technicians to have known about this or at least for this to be in the TIS (Technical Information System) that they refer to. Then there was about another £200 to re-gas and test for leaks, which is fair enough. Therefore, here, I feel I was charged £200 extra for repeating work I'd already done. The cost for the Starting Problem "fix" ( reprogramming ECU and cleaning EGR etc) was about £350, but they offered no guarantee that it would actually fix it..... Still, I have yet to try it on a good run, but I admit that I'm not too hopeful about this because the symptoms that everyone has with this are so alike that I don't think that something like a dirty valve would cause it. ....because that would most likely impede starting at any temperature and different degrees of dirtiness would cause a variation in severity, which we don't really see. |

Offline | Cured?? Ok after last weeks checks the car was back all day at the dealer today for Injector One to be replaced. This was done and they then carried out various time delays between starting the engine with no hot start problem showing! I started it up at the dealer on 3/4 temp reading and it was perfect. After a 40min drive parked up and a few minutes later restarted and it was fine again! So far so good...I will now leave it for about 45 mins and restart to see if the problem has really gone but I have to say it does look promising at the moment. Mine was having the problem every start up after getting to correct temp no matter how long it was left so maybe this is the answer!?? I'll keep you posted... |

Offline | Have used the car most of Saturday and this morning and the Hot Start has GONE....mostly! I notived a slight hesitation once after the car had been rested for an hour but this was only for about a second or so and has not done so again (even when rested for same time). I have done several restarts in a row and again no problem. Considering mine was bogging down for about 5 seconds or so EVERY start this Injector change has certainly made a huge difference. Would be interesting now to see if anyone else finds this to be the solution as well or in fact if it has been tried and failed elsewhere. So just to clarify - Injector One replaced seems to be the cure! |
