Noisy Power Steering

Got my new One 1st Sept; it's lovely!
However the power steering is SOOOOO noisy, when parking, etc -it whines and buzzes. Is this normal?

Yes it has, yes it was and yes it is.

I'm sure mines got quieter now though. It's over a year old and done almost 12000 miles. It could just be that i'm used to it but it definately seems quieter.

I was lucky enough to have a MINI Cooper to drive last August (when they were REALLY turning heads still in the UK) and the power steering whine made drive-thru's great fun! You'd see people craning their necks to see what it was coming around the bend. Doesn't happen now, but was cool then!

the power steering noise is something to do with the mechanism used, its an electric one istead of hydraulic. Thats why it sounds like a radio controlled car!!!

Ditto - that's when I took delivery of the MINI. Boy, those were the days of feeling priviledged!

Thumbs down Nosiy Steering

My first Mini which was a August 2001 build car had a very noisy powersteering pump on it. People did used to turn and look whe never I was turning the wheel. When I got my second Mini in June a June Build car the noise is not as loud. you can hardley hear it from inside the car. Mini must of done some mods to the system.

If she's not smoking she broken!

Hmmm
Thanks for all your advice and I am growing to love the whirring.
However at really low revs, when turning the wheel, eg when backing into a tight space, it turns into a loud scraping ,chafing kind of noise and carparks full of people hold their hands over their ears. I can only liken it to fingers down a blackboard in terms of wince factor. Is this normal

I agree the whining is normal, but the "scraping, chafing" noise isn't.

My MCS makes a "brrrup...brrrup...brrrup" noise every morning while turning and backing out of the parking spot. A slight vibration in synch with the noise can also be felt at the steering wheel. I have noticed the noise and vibration since day #2 and have 1,850 Km registered on the odometer as of yesterday.

BTW, I don't get this problem if I back straight out without turning.

Any MCS owner with the same experience? Is this normal or another idiosyncrasy of the Mini? Does this warrant a visit to the dealer?

Maybe its just the car's was of saying "good morning"! LOL.

At full lock the power steering on my Cooper, Abi's One, and my father in-laws S all make a terrible racket! But if it's happening before full lock, I would certainly get it looked at. Like bigmick says, if it concerns you, asking the dealer to take a look can help put your mind at rest at best, get a problem identified and fixed at worst.
