Installing a rear sway bar on the ONE

I now have everything i need to install a SS rear sway bar on my ONE.

The problem is.... there isn't a place on the rear subframe to mount the swaybar!

Did a comparo between my ONE and a cooper with SS+ and found that the additional mounting plates required to bolt the rear swar bar on is welded on the rear hub carrier assembly.

Does anyone know of any alternatives of getting the rear sway bar on without having to get outside help to weld the plates on?

thanks all.

If the mounting pads ain't there I will bet my bottom sloty that the only way to remedy that is with a welder.
The thing that stumps me is your reference to a "rear hub carrier assembly". I have just looked at TIS and the mounting plates should be an integral part of the Rear axle carrier"........and I am wondering if you are looking in the right place......

Ok. See the area where the sway bar bushes are bolted down by the brackets? On the MINI ONE, the welded-on metal plate with the mounting holes are non-existent.

I was kinda hoping that the mounting plates were bolt-on pieces and not welded-on. Now that they are, this pretty much throws a wrench in my plans.

The way i see it, either i custom weld a plate on or i buy the entire rear axle from a Cooper S which is $$$$$$$.

Any ideas?

I am afraid there is no way around it. If you want to save money, fabricate the plates yourself (make sure they are nicely wire brushed), do the prep work (mark and remove all traces of paint form the area) and then go to a WELDING shop and let them have at it. It cannot be more than an hour's worth of work then or even less. when they are done welding, paint it all and voila......
Good luck.....

How useful is this bar anyway and why does the One not have one?

Would you need it if you installed SS+ on a One or is it "optional"?

hi Swiss Sam.

The rear anti-sway bar will drastically reduce the One's tendency to roll when cornering. Also, becos it stiffens up the rear, you'll get reduced understeer at the limits.

The One doesn't come with a rear sway bar cos the One is a cheaper car???

I am certain the swaybar mounts are welded on to the Cooper S rear subframe but what i'd like to know if the One's standard suspension is upgraded to SS, would MINI dealers be swapping out for a new rear subframe to accomodate the swaybar or would they just be bolting on mounting plates?

if u spec SS on the one u get the rear sway bar and a thicker front one, basically std cooper setup

it's a must have imo

Hi BanzaiGTti

Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure what you mean by "you'll get reduced understeer at the limits"...
Is this good or bad?

A friend of mine is going to give me his SS+ (he's switching to JCW's), so I'm curious whether I could just swap my One standard suspension for SS+ ones, WITHOUT having to install the sway bar, in other words, is there a point in installing SS+ without the sway bar? The thing is I'm not even sure he's going to keep his sway bar or if the JCW suspension comes with a new one (anyone know this?), in which case I would get his old bar.

But if I get a chance I'll go ask my dealer how they would proceed with this swap and let you know.

Sam
