Offline | Fathers + MINIs = Newborns? **Follow Up** I wanted to start a thread for all first time fathers and their MINI experiences! The subject of this thread was a little joke on the fact that we fathers have so much to learn with raising kids, and our MINI's are often treated like members of the family, or maybe that's only me that combining the two almost makes me feel like a newborn myself. Completely fascinated with life, with a new adventure everyday.I'll begin my journey here: After 8 years of marriage, we decided it was time to start a family (before it was too late!). Well we decided earlier and it didn't happen, but that's besides the point. Fast forward past 9 months and this is where we begin: ![]() The Next Day Lukas Arrives: ![]() ![]() A Month Later (Already with a MINI t-shirt) We call him the "little Man" ![]() The first month, or possibly several months of raising an infant is an interesting ride. I'm not sure about most fathers, but I take an active role of raising my child. The wife and I split shifts to feed and take care of Lukas so that each of us can get some sleep and it's worked out well. But now to the MINI stuff! Before Lukas arrived I had done a bunch of research on strollers that would fit the MINI. I had settled on the Peg Perego Aria GM. http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...ight=strollers But it was all hypothetical since the Lukas hadn't arrived yet, how do I feel now? We have 2 cars, a 1993 Lexus LS400 with a trunk and the MINI. With the wife in the passenger seat, infant seat in back, the stroller in the boot, it's VERY hard to do much shopping. The good thing is that with a newborn, you can't stay out very long before he wakes up (every 3 hours), so you won't get much shopping done anyways. Fortunately, for most shopping, Target, Albertsons, Costco, etc.. you don't need the stroller since you can use the shopping carts, and then there is plenty of space left over. Both in the boot and in the rear seat and floor, as you can see here from a recent trip to Target. ![]() Someone brought up an interesting point about wanting to put the baby in the front seat to tend to the baby while driving. This is what I do. It's much safer, and doesn't require any sort of safety changes. ![]() It's a mirror that costs about US$12 and lets me take a peek in back at what Lukas is doing. If he fusses, I can still reach back and comfort him. Without the mirror, I don't know if I'm patting his head or his foot! This is what it looks like from my point of view. ![]() I love the quick mounting system of the Peg Perego. It takes just a few seconds to put him in the car and remove him. Thanks to the wide opening door, and the fact the seats slide way forward, getting Lukas in and out is a cinch. In fact, even easier than putting him in the Lexus. Very Comfy in his 5 point harness! I want one too!! ![]() So my first month thoughts as a father are as follows: 1.) I still have time to wipe my MINI down daily 2.) Lukas likes the MINI. He sleeps most of the time. Sometimes I'll forget he's there when I'm taking a turn, and he'll remind me that I'm pulling too many G's. 3.) Putting him in and out of the car isn't back breaking--he's about 8 -1/2 pounds now (born 5pounds 12 ounces) 4.) Shopping with an infant and the wife in the passenger seat still leave plenty of room. 5.) If I had to take an extended trip with the stroller and infant seat, there would probably still be room for an overnight bag in the rear seat, and maybe a backpack or two squeezed around. 6.) My wife sits comfortably in front of the infant seat, but it took lots of trial and error to find a combination that works. 7.) I'm not a tall guy, but I've never been more thankful that I'm only 5 foot 10 and my wife is around 5 foot 4--cause its the perfect combination in the MINI Time to get motoring!! ![]() Last edited by OctaneGuy : May 28th, 2004 at 07:13 PM. |

Offline | Looks like I'll have to start contributing to this thread come the end of the year .......we'll have an addition to our 5 yr old. Fortunately my missus has a Vauxhall Meriva (compact MPV) so the MINI will only get used as a family car, when she's at work, and I need to transport the two children around. Not sure how the new one will cope with SS+.....??? Busy doing some mods to me car now before the dosh dries up!!!! Robert |

Offline | Octane guy I am in the exact situation as you.. my baby is now almost 4 mnths.. I have a peg perego car seat and the aria stroller as well. I find it works perfectly for those mall outtings.. although you are right, you are not going to fit a lot of stuff in the boot with the stroller in. We still make do though. I also noticed that if you go grocery shopping the peg perego car seat actually will clip into the top bar of the shopping cart and hold in there snug and secure! Only problem I have with the whole setup is I find the back of the passenger seat gets scratched up a little bit by moving the car seat in and out. I don't have a problem getting my little boy out.. but my wife sometimes knocks the car, I try not to cringe when I see it happen. Congrats to you and all the best with the baby Adam p.s. thanks for all your reasearch into the car seat.and stroller, I still have your webpage bookmarked from when I was showing my wife the stroller before we had the baby. ***************** Cooper Launch Edition # 7/500 Chili red , white roof |

Offline | Hi Adam! You're absolutely right about the shopping carts. I never truly appreciated the shopping cart until the little one came along. Trying to lug him around in the car seat through the shopping mall, and carrying the wifes shopping goodies---is a bit much! So I try as much as possible to shop only where there is a cart! Plus, I hate having to decide before I go out---am I going to buy a lot of stuff?? Should we take the MINI or the Lexus? Pretty much as long as the wife doesn't insist on taking the Lexus, I'll take the MINI, whether or not it was the practical choice. re: Scratched car seat I find that it only rubs a small amount, in that it comes out pretty easily if, and only if, I ensure the passenger seat is folded forward and pushed as far as it will go. It's funny cause in my case it's a perfect fit, and if I can't get the seat out easily, I know I haven't pushed the seat all the way forward--which sometimes happens on an incline. re: knocking the car Ughhhh. Fortunately my wife knows how much I baby my car, so she's very careful. Thanks for the congratulations--and congrats to you too!!! You're 3 months ahead, but from the sounds of Paul Mullet whose 9 months ahead of me, we're in the clear for smooth sailing with our MINI's and infants! |

Offline | The main problem I have with a MINI is parking in the parent and child spaces. The looks and evil glares I get, especially when I'm on my own (we have the MINI sunshades back and sides HIGHLY recomended by the way) with Alfie in the back. I always get a smug feeling when I pull him out of the back seat and said "staring people" glance away as if they were never really staring in the first place. |

Offline | We've our fourth on the way so clearly we outgrew the Mini some time ago! However my eldest two love riding in their booster seats in the Mini, perfect for day out with Dad. Once I took one of them along with my 100 lb. Alaskan Malamute to the pet store; onlookers were quite surprised to see a giant dog hopping out the back of a tiny car! |

Offline | After almost 2 years of marriage, my husband & I are deciding to start a family pretty soon. Congratulations for your cute litlle guy and thanks for the tips in how to fit stuff in the MINI. I like that mirror attached to the seat, I haven't seen it in other baby seats, and I was wondering... how do you know if the baby is in trouble if you cannot see him. I'll defenetly go for that one when the moment comes. Thanks again! Aloha ![]() |

Offline | Congratulations! And thank you!! The mirror can be found at any baby store. I'm not sure if you have a BabysRUs in your town--they are the baby version of ToysRUs. But I've seen them in stores that cater to baby safety as well. We bought 2, one for each car, and they are great to have. The MINI mirror is on the small side to see the reflection. I need to stretch a little bit from my normal driving position to see the mirror. It's not hard, but does require a bit more effort than just looking into my rearview mirror. This way I can see if he's sleeping or wide awake. He's around 11weeks now, and doing great. He's a lot more vocal, and is sleeping around 5 hours a night now. He's able to grasp things. In fact, he's strong enough to sit propped up against my MINI seat. I took a picture of him on June 5, as seen here, and I needed to hold him up. Now about 1 month later, he's sitting up in the same seat without any help. I'll have to post that pic later, but he almost looks the same! ![]() |

Offline | Thanks again for the info! He is such a cuttie!!!! Thanks for let me know about the mirror... I think it's very important to check the baby out, sometimes when they get older the grab stuff and they put it in their mouth... if you don't see him must be hard to know what is going on.... With this tool, at least you feel more in control. Thanks again for your time, by the way... Is nice to see that you are a happy dad!!!! congratulations again! Aloha Ceci![]() |

Offline | Handy hint if you dont get the mirror (and don't have auto dimming rear view mirrors). In the day, if you put the mirror in the "dipped" position, you can see your baby AND out of the rear window. Bit strange at first, but it works. ![]() |

Offline | Good timing on this thread as the wife and I are expecting our first child in about 7 months! Looking forward to seeing how it all goes. We just bought the wife a 2005 Toyota Matrix a couple of months ago, so that will be the primary baby hauler, but I'm sure my car will be thrown into action now and then. glad to have a thread with all of the advice and specs on what gadgets will work well with the MINI. Offline | Ok fathers who have kids older than 4 months and have outgrown their infant seats, please chime in, please! My son at 10 weeks is growing fast, and am concerned that by 4 to 6 months, he'll have outgrown his infant seat. What then? My Peg Perego Infant Seat already takes up a lot of room in the back, and I'm not so confident that a larger seat is going to work. Tell me what you are or have done, except drove a different car?? It's my understanding that the time after Infancy and being old enough to fit a Booster Seat is the toughest. Please comment! Thanks Richard Lin |

Offline | Hmmm, how do you see the baby without the mirror? He's rear facing---facing towards the back, so I can't really see how the rear view mirror could see the baby facing the opposite direction? Also, I know your baby is a bit older than mine. How is your infant/baby seat holding up? Has the baby outgrown the infant seat yet, and if so, what have you done? Thanks! |
