So BMW now fit the ISOFIX rear seat system as standard.... question is does anybody know if this is something that has been fitted to all vehicles since inception of the car, just without us knowing, or is something that can be added by swapping the back seats?

No it wasn't.

They actually weld an extra bar into the car for the ISOFIX as the point is it's mounted to the chasis of the car.

I imagine with the number of people going for this low cost option, it was cheaper via economies of scale to just fit it across the range than fit it to every other car (for example). I believe it was standard in some countries anyway, from the start (but could be wrong).
