So it seems the Bruins have traded Petr Kalus (one of their top forward prospects) and a 4th round pick for Manny Fernandez. At $4.33m a year. Yeah. So they just sucked up a good size chunk of cap space for a goalie that I don't really think is an upgrade over Thomas, who costs about a quarter what Manny costs. Manny's got a better GAA but only a marginally better save %, the GAA difference can be attributed to the fact that he faced an average of 5 fewer shots per game playing behind a better D in Minne than he'll have in Boston. Of all the goalies who are/were known to be "on the market" this summer, the Bruins have gone for one who is definitely in the lower half. Better than Belfour, but really, how much is that saying? There are rumors that the Sens might lose Emery, so I suppose it could have been worse. But there was a lot of buzz around Kalus last season, I hope they don't ended up discovering they gave up too much. So now either Hannu or Timmy is going to be gone. The Boston Herald seems to think it would be Timmy, but the team has been shopping Hannu for weeks now, there are rumors out of Edmonton that he might be heading there in a package deal with Glen Murray (which would also be dumb). he Blues have been suggested as another possible destination. Huh. Well, GM Chiarelli has fired virtually everyone in the past three weeks, so it's all on him now. If the team he puts together sucks, he ought to be out the door...

Oooh, another late update, the Isles lost Ryan Smyth to the Avs. Gotta say, this has been one crazy-busy first day of free agency. It's interesting to look at who the winners (Rangers, Flyers) and losers (Isles, Devils, Sabres) have been so far. It's also intersting to look at who seems to have completely missed the opening bell. Hey Senators, you are aware that Free Agency has started, aren't you? Hey Blue Jackets, are you still hung over from hosting the draft? Wakey wakey!

Sad to see Marty St Louis and Eric Perrin split up, but from what I gather the Lightning were really jerking Perrin around. They were low-balling him on their offer, and in the press the GM was suggesting that Perrin was expected to be back on the fourth line this coming season (after having worked his way up to the centering the second line with Brad Richards this past year). As soon as July 1 rolled around and he became an unrestricted FA, Atlanta offerred him $1.5m/2 years, and he said "so long Tampa". Good for him. Just means yet another team I have to pay attention to this year...

The GMs are burning the midnight oil tonight. Paul Kariya just jumped ship from the S.S. Predator and signed with the Blues, while the Pens have signed Petr Sykora from Edmonton and Darryl Sydor from Dallas. Man, I don't remember day one of the free agent signing period being this busy last year. This has been crazier than the trade deadline, there are all kinds of names moving around right now...

Although I hate the Rangers, if I was a hockey player I'd want to play with them. Are they like the Yankees? 51.5 million for Gomez and 35.25 for Drury that's some serious money. I knew that Buffalo was going to lose all the 'good' players. If they were going to win the cup this year was the year to do it. Nearly everyone is up for free agency. Nice to see Philly get some good players...wait did I just say that what I meant to say is Flyers suck! I don't think that there was anyone on the Caps that was up for free agency (we shipped them all off before the trade deadline). But nice to see that we got Tom Poti and Viktor Koslov. A veteran D and a pretty good center. He'll probably be put on the line with Ovey and Semin (although I've heard rumors of them being split up and placed on different lines).

I knew that Islander-nation wasn't going to be able to keep Smyth plus they lose Blake. Hopefully the Rick can score some goals too because they're going to need him to man up. It's a sad day on Strong Island.

So even though Boston re-signed Ms. Finland they are still shopping him? Seems strange are these contracts not guaranteed? or are they and they looking for someone to just take him for what they paid him? I know with the Jagr deal we got the royal shaft. We were still paying his salary and there are even options (that I think we had to pay him this year too)...let me find the article. The Caps were paying between 4-4.5 million on his contract for the next 4 years but if certain conditions were met than a fifth year would be added to the contract. This was the final year of his contract. If he scores 40 goals or 90 points and his team wins the first round of the playoffs in the final year of the contract.
If he scores 80 goals or 180 points in the final two years of the contract and his team wins two rounds of the playoffs.
If he wins a major award in the final three seasons of the deal or his team wins two Stanley Cups in that time.
