I'm trying to talk the Lapps into meeting up with us from the Corning area.

Here's the website for the South Deerfield Red Roof Inn, if anyone needs it.
Red Roof Inn South Deerfield Massachusetts Hotel
1-800-REDROOF

Basic accomodations, but clean and well-run. And more fun with a pack of Minis.

OK, bumping this back up. I heard from the Lapps, and they are taking an even more scenic route than us, via Montreal, so they'll meet us in NH.

Will have to check with the Chicago & points west crowd.

So these seem to be the participants:

- Yellowmininy
- Gegalle
- Rogue Cooper
- Venno (jumping in around Syracuse after a quick flight back from taking aerial pics at the departure point)
- Pamlico

Haven't heard anything recently from Gegalle or Rogue Cooper though

Venno - still planning on taking pics from above? Will there be enough time for you to take those pics, fly back, land in Syracuse, tie down the plane, and join up as we pass through Syracuse. It's only about an hour's drive down the Thruway to the Syracuse area. How fast is that plane?

Distance: 57 NM to FZY (Oswego County airport in Fulton), Ground Speed (assuming NO wind): 95 knots= 36 min Leg time+10 min tie down+35 min =1:21 minutes... from there i can catch up with you, since....
Distance from 43° 3'42.05"N / 77°28'37.70"W to Collamer, Dewitt, (its the closest exit to the throughway)NY =1:17

In the case of there actually being wind, it woudl probably be helping me, that would make me about 6 min faster and come in just as you guys are coming....I'll have my cell and 2 radios on me when I'm flying above and when I'm on the ground...I'll PM my cell number to Yellow and Pamlico
I can probably push a little faster than those speeds, but that should leave me with the slightest safety margin
Oh and if the weather is not condusive to flying or i have the slightest doubt I will not go up

Sorry, I've been wicked busy recently. I'm still planning on meeting up with you all in the Basin and heading out June 14th. I thought about posting in my general excitement after receiving my registration pack...especially after reading something in the included material about hand held radios/walkie talkies. Are we using them? Should I invest in some?

I have extra radios, but they are not too expensive and will come in handy throughout the weekend.

The hand held radios vary in price, here's a list from Circuit City. The mileage range noted in the descriptions is really only accurate across a totally open area. If you get stuck we have an extra one that you could borrow. It's pretty basic but should serve the purpose. They are helpful to have when driving in a group.

The plan is to meet in the Basin at 10:15 / 10:30 and leave at 11:00.

I'll send you a PM with my cell phone # before we gather.

Thanks for the list. I picked up a reasonably priced set... but I admit it's left me with more questions. I was reading through the directions and it mentioned needing a GMRS license to operate on channels 1 - 7 and 15 - 22. Will we be on the FRS channels 8 - 14 or should I see about getting a GMRS license?

It would be interesting to take a poll and see how many people have FCC licenses, but I do. I suspect I'm in the minority, though.

Technically, you need a license for a GMRS radio no matter what channels you are on. In reality, there is little priority given to the enforcement of this rule so I wouldn't be too worried. You should be fine on 7-0.

I did get a license some years back (WPZU769) and it took $75 and about a month to receive it. Thus, it may be too late for licensing in time for MOT. You can always tell them the paperwork is in the mail.

It's up to $85 now, but it's totally better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks for the input!
