Offline | I've got a mountain bike (Schwinn Rocket 88 dual suspension) and a road bike (Specialized allez something or other), but my favorite bike is this: ![]() a Firemans Texas Cruzer single speed... ummm... bike. I love it because it's just like the BMX bike I always wanted as a kid. I never had a cool BMX bike. But, like the bikes I road around town on as a kid, you can just hop on this and ride it. No special shoes. No special shorts and shirt. No riding gloves. No hydration pack / Camelback. No noise from the deraileur. Just hop on and ride. The wheels are mountain bike sized, but most of the other components are from BMX parts catalogs. The handlebars are from the even more niche BMX cruiser bikes. Same idea as this, but with 24" wheels instead of the 20" on BMX bikes or 26" on mountain bikes and my bike. I even live dangerously and ride it without a helmet most times when I'm just heading down the bike path to town. I know it's a bad example, but come on... I grew up riding a bike without a helmet. And I do wear a helmet when I'm riding on the road or on my mountain bike. It's just so nice to be able to hop on a bike without making any other preperations. |

![]() lost in the ozone again | Helmets......... It is indeed unfortunate that I was in the bicycle business for 13 years in my youth (1970-1983), because I became aware of some statistics that would change the way I thought forever. Back in the early 70's the CPSC (consumer product safety commission) was asked by congress to look at consumer products in America from the standpoint of number of accidents as related to total numbers sold. Guess what came out on top : yep, the Bicycle. and of those accidents, over 90% were head related. I've worn a helmet on motorcycles even when I didn't have to(New Hampshire) .Why should it be any different on a bicycle? At least on the streets you have the position of being a pedestrian , but there are horror stories there too, like one of my customers that had a car door opened into her from behind as a car went by and she spent 10 hours in the tall grass along the plum island turnpike parallized neck down before she was found(still paralized today) . I too grew up not wearing helmets and I'm alive, but................I wear one now, you bet! out of my mind.........back in five minutes. |

Offline | Helmets! Bet your ass... or if you're not wearing one, maybe bet that useless lump 3' above your ass. I have a Bianchi hybrid (about 10 yrs old) that's my regular ride, and a pretty slick mountain bike from REI (front suspension). But here's a cool ride I tried out after completing the Hub-on-Wheels ride last year. Now that's cruisin' ![]() |

Offline | This is a dangerous topic. I've got 7 bicycles. This is my favorite - a 1961 Schwinn Flying Star that I named Oldpaint when I bought it in about 1986. It rides well, stops reasonably quickly for a coaster brake bike, and has good lines and proportions. Others in my collection include: a Dahon that I took to MOT last year; a1986 Columbia RX5 - I thought the suspension would be good on cobblestone roads; a 1957 Schwinn Jaguar thats good for rainy days with its original stainless steel fenders; a pre-war (thats WWII) Schwinn with a skiptooth chain thats very unpleasant to ride; a Fat Chance mountain bike that was a lot of fun on the Mt Washington Auto Rd*; a Bianchi racing bike that I rode at a speed of 47 mph down Crawford Notch. *Used to be allowed - not anymore. everything you know is wrong gnorw si wonk uoy gnihtyreve |

| Amiga 500 to PS3 20 Years | This is what my bike looks like: ![]() A Kona Cinder Cone The only changes I've made are a set of DMR pedals and a set of slick tyres for when I did the London to Brighton. I used to work in a bike shop as my first job. I had a completely customised bike built from the frame up. It got stolen and I couldn't face starting one again so got a Kona Cinder Cone with the insurance money. Fully rigid with straight forks up front. It had a really good paint finish on it. A dark matte blue powdercoat with yellow writing. Unfortunately that got stolen too so I got the latest Cinder Cone (at the time) with front suspension. I'd really like to get out on it more but haven't anywhere to put it in my flat ![]() Need to ask if i can fit a loop into the wall on the landing area to lock it too. Others have their bikes locked to the banisters by the stairs. ![]() It was acceptable in the 80's |
