Offline | Useful alternatives to area interstates I thought we might be able to have a resource thread that lists some alternatives to major (and not so major) interstates in the area. I'm talking about roads that pretty much parallel the interstate, or connect two points commonly traveled between, providing a more stimulating drive and not lengthening the travel time too much. Perhaps another thread is needed of "epic" drives for when time is not as important (like route 100 in Vermont - I've made the trip down to Peabody in 3 hours in the interstate and taken 6 hours to get back by using 101 through NH / 100 in Vermont) Here are my initial contributions: Route 14 in Vermont as an alternative to I89 from White River Junction to Montpelier. There's a little bit of a slowdown at both ends (White River Junction and Barre / Montpelier), but inbetween is a nice two lane river following road. Some narrow bridges, some one lane bridges, an amazing valley and beaver ponds about 20 miles south of Barre. Since 14 does parallel 89, there are a few opportunities to get on / off of 14. I've only used 14 twice as I made my way from northern Vermont to the Boston area, so I need to do some more research before I post a "definitive guide". ![]() Route 2 in Vermont as an alternative to I89 from Burlington to Montpelier. Not that curvy, but definitely more stimulating than the interstate and not much slower. Anyone able to fill in the blanks to get me from White River Junction / West Lebanon down to MINI of Peabody (Routes 89 and 93)? |

| Only Unbalanced | In the lower Hudson Valley, an excellent alternative to catching the NYS Thruway or Route 17 upstate from NYC, or Westchester is to take the Palisades almost all the way to the top, and then bear west on Route 6. Over the mountain and through the park. It comes out on either directly onto Route 17 north, with no side roads exit, or onto 32, so you can then get onto the Thruway north. And, behold, should you need the permission of she-or-he-who-must-be-obeyed... it goes right past the Woodbury Commons Outlets. David |

Offline | Jason/snid...when in Leb, take 12 (1st exit in NH after bridge) and head down thru Plainfield, stop at St. Gaudens, down to N. Walpole, NH. Then take 123 through Alstead, Marlow, STODDARD (me), Hancock, to Peterborough, then get on 101 heading East. 123 is a great driving road and 123A is better but drops you off a little too far N for this trip. Lotsa moose, too (sorry) Lawdy, Lawdy, the Cross I bear. |

Offline | Hi Cape Cod Mini: I am most familiar with the Cape Cod tunnel. (Oy.) If you have an improved route I would love to receive a pm on it. I visit my grandparents' cottage in North Eastham quite frequently and usually pay the price in backed up traffic. Can't beat the Cape though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gryphon |
