I unexpectedly did some scouting in the Daks this weekend (that's Adirondaks - Upstate New York). I went to the local mall here in Burlington Vermont to get lunch, but the food court was packed. Strangely, I wound up eating lunch at a McDonald's in Lake Placid and using up a full tank of gas before I got back home.

There must be some killer roads out there to motor on. I found some pretty good ones, most notably stretches of route 30. I remember being in Clear Lake, Paul Smiths, Saranac, Long Lake, and Minerva along with Lake Placid. There is NOBODY out there in the woods. Eerily little traffic. The biggest bummer I found was the suggested speed signs for the curves were completely useless. Curves marked at 30mph could easily be taken at 70mph. Then, there would be curves with no warning sign that were scary at 50mph.

Some futher research would be needed to plan a route. Along with miles of interesting roads, I found more miles of horribly boring roads... long straight sections of nothing. I did not venture from the main roads onto the secondary ones, I'd be willing to bet some of those are tons of fun.

Oh yeah, the scenery was incredible. I wish Vermont had some of New York's mountains.

There was an event in early Sept. up there put on by THELPJOB contact him....I know they had a route planned out.....

When I picked up my MINI at Keeler, I went north on I-87 to Lake Placid . On some straight deserted and rock walled sections of I-87, I checked out how fast the MINI could go in all gears not exceeding the 4000 rev/ new car limit on the tach, then across the lake on the ferry, across VT, and NH and home to Bangor....1243 miles from Thursday to Sunday!

As a former upstater it always amuses me that most folks don't realize that upper NY is so sparsely populated.....

I'm familar with the area from fishing Lakes George and Champlain for many years and going to the Luge/Bobsled runs at Lake Placid. Used to bomb all over the back roads in a Subaru Impreze 2.5RS. If you thought Rte. 123A was fun on the MAMA run you ain't seen nothin' yet .
