and if she wants to be virus free get a mac...( unless she has a huge investment in PC software and even then she can run Virtual PC XP on the mac and for all except games it will be fine)

Careful now...if she springs the bucks for a G5 Virtual PC will not run on it. It's still good for the G4 lineup though. MS bought the software not too long ago, has been lagging in getting the next version to market, as they have been with Outlook full version.

a lot will depend on the kind of user she is if she is a windows powere user then sure she should stay with the PC but if she is a more normal home user I bet after a few days of transition shee will be far happier using an iMac

Unless she is tied into legacy PC apps or <gasp> PC gaming OS X should do anything that she needs whether she is a Power User or not. There's a huge amount of proprietary and open source software out there that will run quite nicely.

Good point about the G5 but I was recommending the G4 iMac as the G5 does not come with the Appleworks and Quickbooks software bundle and I am not even sure about iLife with the G5... do they include it on this machine?

BTW have you had a chance to play with Garage band?
I thought it would be something just for tean rockers with a name like that but it I actualy am finding it a lot of fun

My belief is that iLife comes will all Apple products shipping. They do back off on the AppleWorks etc for the "Pro" setups, kind of a shame I think. I keep all of my own machines MS free, I have no problems using Appleworks with Word docs, Excel, even Powerpoint (using Keynote). There's rumor of a killer Appleworks around the corner too.

Think of Garageband as an entry into music recording. Once you get past all the features and want more Apple touts better, more expensive software.

And sure, the G5 is overkill for a home machine. Until you use one at home. Then it becomes mandatory. Incredible what they've done for the price point.

But I'm still hesitant to give up the G4 450Mhz Cube. Still does all that I need to do, and has that refined look in the living room. Not to mention it's silent and low heat producing qualities.

Windshadow,
My son and I went for a walk on West Dennis Beach last night at dusk. MINI was pointing SSE directly at Nantucket. I flashed a Xenon and halogen morse code across the sound. Did you see it?

Thank you Apple and PC Afficianados for taking the tech talk to our OT&B.

Todays best pre-screened emails. In the subject line:

"san avert diverge curate ass runty comanche rollback subject gauge wife lunge peregrine inferred brookhaven bayberry copious academician felix future bridgeable serif gigantic breeze although cholera "

"schroedinger abhorrent casual clock caucus sportsman achromatic transmitter bella operon porcelain species chambers carrot bottle drafty rickets beebread sunshiny woodruff come excelled"

Doesn't that make you want to read them and buy their products?

Please, everybody go out and by a G5! Okay, I don't actually own a Mac, and I don't expect to anytime soon, but my company makes the G5 processor and I'm not ashamed to stump for more business...

Should we start a 'Shameless Self-Promotion Thread"? I'm down wit dat.
Call me I can help.
Besides the typical Gateway product line I have access to the following:
schroedinger abhorrent casual clock caucus sportsman achromatic transmitter bella operon porcelain species chambers carrot bottle drafty rickets beebread sunshiny woodruff come excelled.
Line forms on the left.

In appreciation of your support I have graciously made available a major gift to MOT prize pool. You may start an auction or whatever best serves the cause.

Can I opt for a combo? How about cholera, lunge, wife (or ex-wife), runty, abhorent, and rickets?

Lawdy, Lawdy, the Cross I bear.

The winner is free to mix and match. My personall recomendation is to substitute the always popular "Ratty Ass" for the Ass Runty that is, it seems, the standard offering.

Although technically it says "ass runty comanche", I can't help but think that Runty Ass Comanche would make an awesome name for a band. I wonder if Wal-Mart would carry their CDs...
