After meeting Keiths brother ... ... at MINI Peabody this morning, I posted this update to my weblog: Ken described the accident (June 12) as a shallow dive into shallow water, Keith hitting a sand bar. Keith completely shattered vertebra "C5", and put a hairline fracture in "C7". While the "C7" damage is negligible, smashing "C5" has put tremendous stress on Keiths spinal cord - it was not cut but is severly contused. On Sunday evening / early Monday, Keith was conscious and able to move his arms. Sadly pneumonia set in and he has been in a forced coma since then. A tracheotomy was needed to assist with his breathing - this means that the few times when sedation has been reduced, Keith was unable to speak even while he was able to move his arms and respond to his family. Two surgeries have been performed to stabilise Keiths neck - one from the front & one from the rear. Basically his "C4" and "C6" vertebra have been wired together to stabilise his spine around the smashed "C5"; this in itself will limit Keiths neck movement in the future. Currently Keith remains at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, with sedation likely for at least another week until his lungs recover sufficiently to allow him to breath un-assisted. His medical insurer is objecting to plans to transfer Keith to the Shepherd Center, instead preferring to keep his treatment in Massachusetts - presumably cost issues are behind that preference. Keiths doctors and of course his family wish for him to be transferred to what is recognized as the best spinal rehab in the country - an important motivation is the expertise at the Shepherd Center in assisting patients to regain their life, including the very important ability (for Keith) to enable him to continue to drive!

Found another car for Danz to add to the "stable". Vehicle Description Ugly Austin Mini, believed to be 1964ish. No title. Hear the roar of the powerful 850cc powerplant, but it doesn't run. Supposed to have been a runner when parked, missing some distributor parts so it doesn't start. Beautiful latex Union Jack on the roof, has years of patina for that classic british car look. Floor has been replaced by a roofer sometime in the past, probably used the boot floor for some of the repairs 'cause it's missing. Bonnet is a little wavy, but not rusty, doors are reasonably sound but have some rust in the bottoms. Colorado car is in much better condition than some daily drivers that have been restored back east. A pillars fairly sound, most of the body shell is intact and sound. Front clip has seen better days, it must have been pranged in the past, and is now encased in a protective layer of body filler. Subframes are in good shape, as is the suspension. Dry suspension, stock wheels and mismatched tires that hold air for a week or so. Cortina seats are the only creature comfort besides an aftermarket steering wheel. I have seen much worse cars in restoration shops as raw materal for Monte Carlo clones, this car still has some useful life left in it, or can be filled with potting soil and made into an Anglophile's flowerpot. Must be picked up in Cheyenne, Wyoming. http://tinyurl.com/82jym

I stopped at the German car show in Stowe this afternoon. It was much smaller than the British show, but this was the first year for the German show, so that's to be expected. 5 or 6 VWs, all modern; 1 Mercedes; about 20 Porsches, nothing out of the ordinary; 8 or so Audis, again nothing out of the ordinary; and 30 or so BMWs - a couple of 2002s (model, not year) but most of the rest were modern 3 series cars. There was a MINI that had registered, but mever showed up. I took 2 rolls of film, then realized that I didn't have the film speed set right So, I guess I get to do my first experiment in "push processing". Once I realized this, I burned through another roll with the film speed set correctly.
