Here's a few more.. melvin n. v. A reverse wedgie. Pulling the frontside of someones underwear as high as possible, or until he screams and cries in pain. Usually given to wiseass kids who taunt older classmates. Can be especially painful if the person getting the melvin is wearing boxer shorts. cf. Wedgie circa. mid 1990's USA MELVINS - You give someone a melvin by approaching from behind, and yanking up on the waistband of their underwear as hard as you can (also popularized on SEINFELD as a "wedgie" A "Melvin" was also a nerd synonym. Band Names MELVINS - You give someone a melvin by approaching from behind, and yanking up on the waistband of their underwear as hard as you can. Melvin was also a local character in Washington State arrested for stealing a Christmas tree. I like the definition of this one the best though: "Melvin" means the act of getting your testicles crunched with accompanying jerking action of the head and neck. http://www.austinchronicle.com/mrpants/language.html MELVIN (acronym) Mediocrity, Ego, Limits, Vanity, Incompetence, Name-calling. Non-productive aspects of workplace behaviour and attitude. Various MELVIN terms (eg 'NO MELVIN', 'Don't be a MELVIN', 'No MELVIN's here', etc) help remind people of the behaviours to avoid, especially in blame cultures or negative-thinking environments. (Ack P Lubbers) Sits well alongside other motivational and positive attitude maxims, many examples on the quotes and leadership sections, and links well with the philosphies of Covey's seven habits, Carter-Scott's rules of life and Ruiz's Four Agreements. http://www.businessballs.com/acronyms.htm

Money slang - not that I have ever heard of it: Melvin - £5 [From Howard Melvin and the Bluenotes - thanks to Rob Neal] Seems to me that many "slang phrases" on those pages have been made up by one person, desperate to make their mark on the language

I don't know about you Gavin, but it really does not seem like Easter ... England: This is a big event. Our first holiday since Christmas / New Year and we get Friday & Monday for a four day weekend ![]() Spring is fully sprung with crocuses finished, daffs and just-about-green trees. My Dad has his first Caravan trip of the year this weekend (how to translate caravan for Americans?) Over here - just a weekend. Cool, dull (weather and day). Not even proper (Cadburys) easter eggs unless you hunt them down. Not even washing GBMINI makes Easter any better

No, doesn't really seem like Easter... until you realise a lot of the shops (sorry, stores) are closed. Doh! We're going out to lunch with two other Brits, but it still won't seem like easter. Try eating your easter eggs on Marathon Day Ian and see if that helps..! ![]() Religion is like a huge dog. If it's yours it's very friendly and comforting, but it scares the heck out of everyone else.

Happy Easter to all Gavin and Ian, sorry you feel home sick. Eat some more Cadbury eggs and you'll feel sick in a different way and that'll take your mind off things.PC question/comments. My now 6 year old HP desktop has been giving me startup errors/disc errors a lot in the past week. It started with very occasional disc errors last winter but started regularly this week. Before it sh*ts the bed completely I am going to purchase another. I was looking at the cheap Dell pc's. Free shipping and rebates are currently being offered. I mostly work process, surf and email. But do occasionally burn music and do photo stuff. I'm supposedly getting a digital video camera for my birthday this year so will want it to compliment that. I do no gaming on the pc. I don't like Mac's. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Oh, I'll most likely buy it in the next hour or so too. Missing my buddies Dan, Ed, and Diane but glad I have three angel buddies , And on a quest to Right Secco's Wrongs

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP Hard drives are real cheap these days. Go out and buy one. Install and set up as D: (or whatever). Do a complete copy from the one drive to the other using a disk clone program. Do it now before the drive dies and all is lost forever. After that if you want (assuming you are not running XP) you can switch over to the new drive and be OK. That way you can take a little longer to decide what new PC to get. If you must get one now and quick you don't have much choice. Stores don't carry the "slower" (only 2GHz) ones. Decide if you want a DVD burner (good for BACKUPS - did I mention that before) Costco has some good prices on slightly older models (that are still as fast as my one). Any PC you can buy today will be way fast enough for digital cameras, video editing or whatever you want to do. Oh - what about a Mac ![]() One last thing: BACKUP!

| I would go with a Dell, the ones we have around here are great. I am going to replace my old Toshiba Tecra 8100 Laptop with a new Dell one soon. Once work can get the scrach up to get it for me. I wouldn't go with a low end cheap one, do a medium job like Dimension 4600 series. This will give you an overall good system but not having to upgrade it when you want to do something or have too much that your never going to use. Your best bet though Steve is to give them a ring on the phone and talk to someone, they can taylor your system for you or at the very least give you options for your music and video needs. | PS: If you were nearer, I could help out with all the backup stuff. Also, I would considering buying from the local computer shows (www.ncshows.com) and put it together myself. That way you don't have to buy something that is more expensive than you need. |

Don't rule out Macs if you have not used one in the past few years. Excellent hardware, a rock solid OS, easy integration with PCs. For burning music, photo stuff, and making and editing movies it's the preferred system due to the iLife apps and tools. I support both sides of the world, less issues on the Mac side. Currently no worries about virii too, a big thing. Far as I know there's very little spyware out there too that hobbles the Mac. Otherwise Dell is a good generic machine, less problems than a Compaq/HP, IBM, Toshiba, Sony etc. Less proprietary hardware in the Dell lineup. Maybe Max can get you a good deal on a Geteway (heh heh...). Sounds like you are about to experience a major disk failure, 6 yeard old and all. Get a good backup of your needed docs now, before you go out to buy anything.

After you back your stuff up you can run from a dos or cmd prompt: (Start->Run->cmd then hit enter) chkdsk c: /f /r Say "y" if it asks you to run on the next reboot. This will scan your disk and mark off in your FAT table the bad blocks, it will also move and repair (if it can) the data in the bad blocks. This procedure can take quite some time and it should give you more time until you replace the computer. Winslow 2008 R56 Cooper - Pepper White with Black roof -- "Oliver"
