I knew a reference to Hannity would get a response from CCM!!!
Coombs doesn't smack him becase he was hand-picked by Hannity as a suitable 'partner'.

brilliants was meant, obviously, with thrice my usual amount of sarcasm. Had Hannity had a brain, he would have stayed in the seminary. Friday night, he said he was going to have his "usual Sunday BBQ tomorrow." One wonders how many sets of knee pads he gets from Newt and his other idols. Geo. Will was nice to him recently in a suitably patronizing manner. Just MHO

The Economy sucks really, couldn't tell by the fact my 401K is doing really well (better than it has in 3 years), or the fact that I have a company trying to get me to come in for a Job Interview. Stock is still in the crapper but that is due to legal action from another company from 3 years ago that is just now playing out, but I was able to off load enough to buy my 2nd Mini.

So lets do this, how about we stop talking about the crappy economy and go see a really neat Sci-Fi Movie...

Looks like fun except for "Angelina Jolene as Captain Franky Cooks". Hahahaahaaaa, with the eye patch. They must have paid her a lot of money to look that stupid. Does she beat the resistance to death with her lips?

Camcorder owners, need advice please. I'll be getting a Camcorder as a birthday gift in June. Doing some research and looking for your good advice.
Right now I'm considering the DVD camcorders so I can record directly to a dvd-r or -rw. Not sure if that is a benefit if I want to try my hand at editing and mixing/making home movies.

If you have any advice or opinions I will be grateful.

Get a standard Mini DV tape camera. Then get a Mac to do your editing.

Not sure about those DVD camcorders, but the instant access seems like a neat trick to have. On today's experience I'd say battery life is the most important thing. (I would have got more footage of cars if I'd remembered to switch it off when it was parked looking at a fence though..! ) I haven't really looked at camcorders recently, but any kind of steady shot device is worth having. Mega zooms seem like fun, but over use can cause motion sickness in your viewers. Make sure if it has digital and optical zoom that you can switch off the digital zoom function. Canon has just released two new camcorders with 2MP still modes and true 16:9 wide screen modes. This would allow you to take reasonable digital stills in the same device and future proof you somewhat for the widescreen TV you'll get one day (Maybe you already have one). If you want to blow the budget they also do one that can take the Canon EOS SLR lenses, right up to the $10K 600mm L series lens..!!
Email me if you want to get into a bigger 'gadget' discussion Steve..!

edit:
Canon Optura info is HERE

Gaget discussion time again - cool

As Gavin says, you want long battery life and I expect the DVD camcorders will eat more batteries than tape based ones (?)
They are also much more expensive?
DVD recorders now are lowish price ($300) and easy to use ... Mini DV camcorders are well proven and probably the best cost / performance at the moment.

I can't believe you all provided this plethora of advice. The only intent was to have us all aware of Mr. Cod's birthday in June. He may be getting a camera but it won't be from me.

BTW my birthday is August 1st.

Geez, they kicked Max out of FLA already!!!
Yeah, it's just a ploy so I won't be forgotten like last year. I'll be on the road this year for my birthday. Up in Maine on the two lane blacktop and gunning for Acadia.

I think I've decided against the DVD cams. Very convenient, but they aren't as versatile when it comes to editing and such. It seems the mini DV is tried and true and gives excellent quality. I can still load into the pc and edit and screw up and eventually burn onto a dvd. No wide screen tv for me. Too expensive! I do like the wide screen option with the camcorders though.
Thanks for the tips and links.

Is this like the computer purchase, where you ask our advice hours before making a purchase..??!!
