I'm only gonna say it once, so I don't come off as being too annoying.

Take it to the track!

I was telling one of the other MINI folks at Lime Rock that I had a feeling that something bad was going to happen with that many people heading to the Dragon with the intention of driving fast on a mountain road. I was hoping it would just be a bunch of speeding tickets, but unfortunately, somebody did overestimate their abilities and drove off the road and rolled down a hillside hitting some trees.

If you want to drive fast, take it to the track.

It may seem expensive, but it's cheaper than a speeding ticket, and way cheaper than the repair bill after you crash.

Not annoying, Jason. Words to the wise. Especially on that road.

I'm waiting for the organizers of that event to figure out that more Minis in that area at one time might not really be a good thing. I was there in 2004 with 125 Minis, and it was slightly nuts. There are many other cycles & cars coming through there, and it is far from a local hospital. Good to see that the accidents that happened (at least from what I've heard) did not have serious injuries.

I was at MotD this year and agree that there were too many cars. Many people didn't seem to get the idea that the Dragon is also US129 and the main commuting route between Robbinsville NC and Marysville TN. There was at least one incident of boyracers being rude to someone who only exceeded the speed limit a little bit.

It's beautiful country and the twisties can be fun but for challenging driving, take it to the track.

But if there had been a passenger in that car we would be having a very different discussion right now

Driving fast in NICE weather is also expensive.
I had the top open, the windows down, the tunes blaring, as I attacked the twisting entrance ramp onto 290W...
There's a devil in them turns. He reached right in from the driver's side and snatched a brand new pair of sunglasses off the dash!!!

+1 (as they say on my new forums)

I had the same thoughts that an incident was imminent.

Not surprised at all -- I plan to be a real party-pooper and make mention of this as part of the Driver's Meeting talk at MOT. Last year I had to play "grumpy old guy" with some twit weaving the center-line markers on one stretch of the Kanc. MINI roadside lecture. The kid thought I was Secco, but I didn't care.

Seriously, the rare porcupine notwithstanding, we've been lucky up there. Let's remember, it's a ride, not a race.

You should be so lucky! Have fun this w/e. I sent your picture to the Black Fly Central Committee upnorth.

So you're saying, Derek, that if we smoke, we shouldn't complain about people driving too fast? Or do I miss your point?

But as someone who dislikes rules and structure, you're really not going to like hillclimbs.

No, I think his point is simply the irony of a visibly pregnant woman smoking a cigarette while expressing concern about the potentially negative effects the sounds of jackhammers may have on her child. The irony being that smoking has many well known and well researched negative effects on a fetus, so her concerns about construction noise seem a bit silly. I don't think the one (driving too fast) has anything to do with the other (the picture)...

Not to change the subject, but...
I know some of you sent cards or letters to the young man in Wyoming trying to get mail from 50 states for his class project, but it looks like some of them didn't make it. Anyone care to try again? I think they'd need to be first class mail rather than post cards to make it before the project is due next week.

States he has not yet received information from:
Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont

PM me for the address (and I'll go clean out my inbox...) Ricardo & Angela, I know you sent cards before. Sorry they didn't make it, but care to try again?
