Bike Race Escorts Wanted I just received this message from Chris Kadlick, MRC President: I was wondering if your club would be interested in helping our club out at some of our events? Basically what I’m interested in is whether your club members would like to drive their Mini’s as Lead and Follow vehicles during some bike race? Please let me know if you would be interested? Thanks. The 10th Annual MRC Sterling Classic Road Race - May 8, 2004 This USCF event is a multi-lap course, which is 8 miles per lap and a few tough climbs. This race will feature USCF Categories Pro/1/2 Men, Cat 3/4 Men, Cat 4/5 Men, Pro/1/2/3 Women, Cat 4 Women, Masters 35+ and Cat 5/Single Day Licensee’s. This race had over 500 participants in 2003. The Fitchburg-Longsjo Stage Race – July 2-5, 2004 One of the premiere cycling events in the Northeast will return for its 45th edition. The Longsjo Stage Race is run on the roads of central Massachusetts. The event consists of an individual time trial, two road races and a criterium (a multi-lap race where the laps are less than a mile in length) and features a grueling finish up Wachusett Mountain. This event draws ~ 800 athletes from around the country and beyond. The MRC is the co-promoter of this event and we play a critical role by providing support staff and managing the stage-by-stage logistics. If anyone is interested, please contact me and I will put you in touch with Chris. Thanks.

Well Max, this is the latest message from Chris - including an answer to your question! If you're not familiar with cycling this is probably the best way to find out first hand. Driving a lead or follow vehicle usually entails just the driver and a USCF (United States Cycling Federation) Official. We have other cars; usually the CAMPAGNOLO RACE SERVICE with is fleet of specialized Volvo's that carries extra wheels and bikes for neutral support. Each vehicle would be equipped with a radio for communication during the race and the Red Cross provides sandwiches from D'Angelo's for the Fitchburg race. So driving a race is typically pretty exciting with speeds on some downhill sections reaching 65-70mph. During the two days we would need you (July 3rd & 4th) at Fitchburg, the Circuit race is a closed course and gets going pretty fast on a 3.5 mile route. The next day the Mountain stage the race finishes at the top of Mt Wachusett. Both days would require a minimum of 8 cars, 2 for each race category. We generally pay for mileage reimbursement of the race distance and would also offer $25/pp for a half-day and $50/pp for a full-day service to your Club. We don't pay individuals only club affiliations. I would also offer some sort of advertisement for your club on our website and possibly the Fitchburg Longsjo website. We have our next monthly meeting with them on Monday. Please let me know how that sounds and sorry for the late notice about this weekend. I had the idea last night and thought what the hell I see where it goes. Thanks again I hope we can support each other. Chris Kadlick MRC President Not sure about the "only pay club affiliations" bit since we are not an actual club ... Anyway, is there any interest in something like this?

I've also been in contact with Chris over the past couple of days, here's the scoop: They want 8 MINIs total each day over a period of 2 days, July 3rd and 4th. MINIs will be carrying race officials over the course, race officials monitoring the event whilst being shotgun. My thinking that a sunfoof MINI would be preferable has been dashed, there will be a professional film crew and photographers present for both days. Here's a link to the official website: http://www.longsjo.com/ Here's a little bit of his last email to me:::: Basically, we're driving the USAC official so they can observe and control the race. We need to have 2 Minis for each race, lead vehicle and follow vehicle. There will an independent film company doing the videotaping. The MRC will probably have a camera there but it won't be in any of the official's cars. Here are the start times and race distance: Saturday July 3rd, 2004 Circuit Race 9:30am- 2 races are going on at the same time- 25 & 28 miles 10:50am- "finish of race"- 25 & 31 miles, 4 cars total 12:15pm- "finish of race"- 18 & 28 miles, 4 cars total 1:30pm- Women's Pro race- 40 miles, 2 cars total 3:15pm- Men's Pro race- 78 miles, 2 cars total Sunday July 4th, 2004 Mountain Race 9am- 4 races are going on at the same time- 69, 47, 47, & 35 miles- 8 cars total 12:30pm- " finish of race"- 104, 58, 69. & 47 miles- 8 cars total Thanks again for the interest. I hope we can make this work with the Mini's. I've seen this race happen.....it's a fast one. Think of a Le Mans on 2 wheels, they'll be travelling over city streets at speed. On the 4th there's a mountain road climb. I told Chris I would freshen up this post and see what happens over the next 3 or 4 days, to see if the MINI community here in Massachusetts and surrounding areas would like to participate in this. Just think, your MINI could be seen on national TV......... Post here if you think you'd like to help out, or more info needed.

Thanks Jeff for picking up this one ... sadly I am unsure that there will be enough interest to get 8 MINIs. I will keep an eye on the thread to see ...

It's a tough weekend for people, lots of family stuff going on. I'll be getting most of that out of the way the mid / end of June though (hence my self-deletion from MOT, need that time to clean things up). Anna (my 7 year old) was watching one of the .wmv's on the website, she said we needed to be there. This really is an incredible race weekend.....you gotta see the legs on these people. The energy expended in one heat could fuel a MINI for a year (think of that at $2.15 a gallon...) One of my wife's great uncles did this race every year. So it's a little bit of a legacy thing to do, I guess. Some day, when we are sitting drinking English Ale I'll tell you about her other uncle....... I sent an email to Joel at MOP, to see if there was any interest there or at MINIUSA. This is the biggest bike road race in North America, good coverage. Would be a good advertising medium for MOP......I've got racks on my MINI, toss a couple of bikes up there, toss on some vinyl graphics, who knows what could happen.

Ducks forthcoming for the Baker Babes. My wife's Uncle once pedaled from Sicily to the Arctic Circle after retirement at age 63. She's from Netherlands. He also pedaled across the U.S. and Canada via the Rockies then to Florida and up to Canadian Maritimes. In Kentucky he was hit by an elderly driver when leaving a town in which he had spent only three days. Those town folk were so enamoured of him they bought him a bus ticket. He rode the bus out of town got off at the next town and bought a bike. Turned around and pedaled back then north again so as not to "Cheat" and miss any mileage. His calfs looked like he was smuggling grapefruit. Families Rule. Happy Fathers Day
