Great post to read by the World of Worldcraft forum member who dropped his ipod in an airplane toilet, and was the cause of one of the many air security emergency landings last week:

That is quite the story...wonder what the follow-up was, i.e. was the iPod salvaged? I sure wouldn't want to be the one cleaning it!

Just to fan the flames of the 'Macs are more expensive' myth...
I am changing jobs (yes, again) so I had reason to price out a MacBook Pro again. They have had a speed bump since I bought the last one in April. Dell's M65 starts out with a low headline price, then you look into it and see they're putting in a low res screen, a slow small hard disk and no DVD burner. Once you add all that to bring it to the spec of the mid range 15in MacBook Pro, the Apple is $50 cheaper than the Dell, even with Dell's current 'saving' of $375..! And OMG is the Dell site hard to navigate. If you go into Home & Home Office, the Precision M65 laptop doesn't even exist..! You have to get there through the Small Business section. WFT does it matter..? I just want a computer!

So, even adding the price of Windows to the Apple, it's still a wash. Might try and hold out until the end of Sept though and see if they bring out Core 2 Duo models. (What next Intel, Core 2 Bi Duo??)

Yeah, I'm hoping Father Christmas brings me on of those, but the boss says we have to renovate the study before we can buy a new desktop machine. The Cube is still doing OK, and the iMac (Luxo Jr style) will go to the kitchen...
Of course, there's the new Rebel XTi that just made my Christmas list too, so I don't know how Santa will carry it all..!

Do any of the other geeks read roughlydrafted.com..? The guy who writes that pointed out something I hadn't thought of. Each MacOS release makes old hardware run a bit faster (up to the point where it drops off the supported list). I'm running 10.4.7 on a 1.2GHz PowerPC G4 in this Cube (yes, I upgraded it) and it does pretty well. Of course, it's hard to compare with Windows, because Microsoft haven't got a major update to the OS out of the door in the last x years..!

Yesterday I was fortunate to have both a MacPro and a Dell 690 in front of me.
I was wrong in comparing the MacPro to the 490. It is really a 690. The motherboard are nearly identical. Rear top power supply, 4 SATA drive slots, same memory on risers, same chips and heatsinks, etc etc. You can tell when both companies "worked with" intel to design the new machines, there was a lot of copy and pasting going on.

Of course, with the mac running $1000 cheaper than the 490, imagine what it is next to the 690!

And yes I discovered roughlydrafted last week, he's got some good stuff on there. That point is something I've been saying for years and has never been absorbed by the other side.

Crossover has been released in beta...which allows you to run windows apps on your intel mac without booting windows in any way, it "bottles" them into a self-contained mac app.

It runs Windows apps without you having to buy Windows... how does it do that then..? I would think that it would fall foul of some sort of Microsoft copyright...

I went upstairs and noticed the guys on Contracts had a Nuvi. I mentioned it, and one of the guys handed it to me and said "Here, test it out." So I'll be playing with that this weekend.
