Crappy timing

I'm into day 2 of my new job search, and what happens? My cell phone dies. Not just "battery's drained" dead, but flashing-screen-and-won't-come-alive dead. And this is the w810i I actually paid a fair bit of money for. I've got a RAZR (*cough* *hack* *ptooie*) gathering dust in a box at home, but that's about 50 miles from where I sit currently. ****!

Any way you can access your online account and set up call forwarding?

Wait...I thought you already had a job. Looking for another one already? Let me know if you find something good with an extra seat.

I assume you've removed the battery for a few minutes?

I'm using CallWave and get my messages emailed to me. I have a direct line and *could* probably call T-Mobile to see if they could forward my calls, but I can't really talk freely here. They know I'm leaving, but still.

Yeah, removed the battery, and the SIM, tried replacing them, and I've been trying to upgrade the firmware with the Sony Ericsson utility, but it won't properly detect the phone for some reason (which could have something to do with running XP in Parallels on my MacBook). I hit the power button and the screen just flashes on and off. This thing's been acting up for months, but it picks *now* to die?

I'm on a contract job and it's wrapping up on the 26th. I know Fidelity is hiring in Merrimack, NH, and I'm really hoping to get on there, either perm or contract (preferably contract for now, so I can more easily take time off). They seem to have a fair number of positions open right now.

This is why I always have a good stack of backup phones at home : ) Heck I could always fire up my first gen Treo!

It's amazing how cell phones are these days. No matter how expensive they are, they still die in a year or so.

"At home" is part of the problem! I've heard of people who don't wear watches because every watch they wear fails in some way, no matter the brand. I think I must have a similar impact on mobile electronics. Every cell phone, PDA, GPS and iPod goes wonky on me eventually.

Interesting. I've never had a watch fail. And I'm not nice to them. I bet my old chuck-e-cheese watch is still ticking* away in some box.
* I guess not, as it was digital. I still can barely read hands unless I'm drunk. Then they somehow are easy to read.
Might as well continue with the tangent...
My watches were always a big part of my geekness. I had a few generations of the casio data bank watches (I think they still sell those unmodified..20 years later!). Calculator watches, I remember at one point it was one of FIVE calculators I had on me at all times in school. I had the first touch screen watch, made from that soft old fashioned touch screen stuff, no buttons, just a few touch zones. I was always jealous of a friend whose parents ran a jewelry store and wore the citizen watch with the big altimeter sensor on the side...way out of my price range. When I went off to college and fooled myself by getting a "nice" analog titanium pulsar. I could never read it and went years without really using it (I didn't start drinking till later).
Now I proudly wear my Tissot T-Touch which is a nice-looking analog with small digital display, good for both brain states, but has all the nerdy features and altimeter stuff hidden behind its crystal touch screen. I didn't want a heavy watch and the titanium version was only available in europe at the time, so I did what any true nerd would do and bought it off ebay from a shop in Geneva! Paid the same price as the regular stainless steel version here and it was delivered in just two days. Sure was a gamble sending such a large paypal payment out of the country though.

That's my wife. Managed to kill a variety of watches or different types and brands until I bought her the Citizen Eco-Drive. Waterproof, no mechanical winder / charger, no batteries... So far, it's been the only one she's managed to keep for a few years.

I hardly ever wear watches, but then I've usually got a cell phone on me. Occasionally it's even a working one! I'm a big fan of Fossil watches, but they seem to chew through batteries.

I see Ian still wears one of those Casio calculator watches; is that an original, Ian?

I'm with you on this one. I own a couple watches, they're in dust-covered boxes somewhere. I can't honestly remember the last time I regularly wore a watch. Maybe undergrad? I dunno, even then there was a clock tower...

That's what I thought, but I thought it was a Brit version so I kept quiet..! The ladies version is a handbag where I come from and the thing she put money in is a purse, so man-bag makes more sense there...

You know what makes me really mad...? (Do you even care? )
Web pages where there is a product photo and underneath it has a link to click on which says it will take you to a larger image, but when you click it, all it does is open the exact same (or marginally bigger image) in a bigger pop up window...!!! Grrr...!
The ones that are the exact same image, you can almost put down to someone linking back to the thumbnail image when they meant to link to a bigger picture, but the ones where it is slightly bigger, but not enough to really notice and certainly not enough to be useful is just crazy. Why do they even bother..?
