yeah, here's a test of one, and then a fun link to a D200 at -38F in Siberia....Ian, you're all set for the next Artic Circle run

I should note that while the camera worked for an hour, at no point was it a good idea to touch it with bare hands

Chris,
Many thanks for all these links - that Ken Rockwell stuff is excellent! Already learned the "two green dots" trick from there (maybe I'll find it in the manual one day)

And yes, I got the UV filter/protector from Hunts at the same time as everything else ... I'll look into getting a polarised one ...

What kind of camera bag did you get, Ian? I'm in love with my Crumpler bags, and I noticed Hunt's sells those. I've got a $4 Million Dollar Home which holds my Rebel XT with kit lens, "nifty fifty", filter wallet and tabletop tripod (along with some other bits and bobs). It's small enough that I'm willing to carry it with me most of the time.

Crumpler are very nice... also check out Kata bags. They also sell body armor if you feel like going to a war zone to try out that VR lens..! I tried to find a Kata bag that fitted all my video stuff (including the underwater housing) and yet was still small enough to be considered carry on. I got close, but didn't quite get there. I think the housing is too big to go as carry on.
But the bags are very well designed & made;

edit:
I should also say what I use for my camera gear...
I have a Pelican camera bag. It's nice in that you can get into in through the side or the top depending how you have the dividers laid out inside and it fits into the appropriate Pelican hard case for time when you need more protection, but you don't have to have the weight of a hard case when you don't need it (Pelican do sell divider sets for their hard cases). Can't find it on Pelican's site, so maybe they don't make them any more, but I found it here;

As for camera and photo links go, honestly NAM's photo forum is one of the best. You will really get useful constructive criticism on photos and answers to any questions you can imagine.

I bought a Lowepro bag which just fits the camera with lens, and takes the charger/cables in its pocket.

I've always had a Lowepro MINI for my previous cameras - chose primarily because it said "MINI" on it and it was the right size. But the D200 needed a bigger bag so I just went up one step. Fine, unless I get corrupted into multi lenses etc ...

I'll head over to NAM and have a look round Josh - but I must say so far I've got great info right here

There are some folks who have some very professional photos they post on a regular basis. DJKonky and Dave are two who hang around the photo and video forum and post great ideas, critiques, and occasionally technique.

I also recommend having a spare battery to be kept in the bag at all times. Not that the battery should ever run out on you in a day of shooting, but I've run out the door and started driving only to remember that the battery was sitting in the charger by the TV. It's nice to fool-proof things.

I have a lowepro as well. I forget the model offhand. It fit my D60 with lens, and second large lens without a millimeter to spare. The XTi is tiny in comparison and doesn't fit snugly at all, not that it moves, but I have to move around the separators. I don't think there's enough space gained to fit my 3rd lens though. The extra pockets are packed with a full size flash, extra battery, flash card, lens cleaners, mini tripod, my flash bounce system, remote release cord, and a couple other things I'm forgetting. It's stood up to plenty of hardships the worst of which is being tossed around on the mini's floor during spirited driving events
