| MINI2 Master | I tried researching the same question and never found definitive responses. It looks like people are happy with both. I've installed and used both in the past month and they were similar. I will say that parallels has a few more mac-like "garnishes" like spinning the screen to full screen, and dragging the window to any size, and showing running PC apps in the dock. Of course both have free trial periods, so you can try both and decide for yourself. |

| Resident Panpsychist | Thanks for the feedback re: Parallels/Fusion. It appears that our Apple Educational Sales rep has bundled Parallels and Final Cut Express with the units we will be getting. I guess I'll have a chance to use Fusion in a trial mode. Last discussion with Apple Edu Sales: Theo: Say, do you know if MS Flight Simulator will run successfully in the Parallels VM? AES: Well, most OpenGL and DirectX games should run in the VM. T: Do you know anyone who is currently running it? A: I can check here to see if anyone knows and call you back. T: That would be great. Later that day.... A: Theo, it turns out that no one has any specific info on your issue. However, Intuit DOES make a version of Quicken for the Mac. T: Ummmm...OK, that's good to know. How about Flight Simulator X? A: Flight Simulator...now that I'm not sure about. I can check here to see if anyone knows and call you back. T: No, that's OK. I'll ask around. <click> Looks like I need to visit my local Apple Store...though, based on what Ian encountered, I'm not sure I can afford the time. You see, I'll be tied up on the phone for 7 or 8 hours with a publisher... ![]() Theo "The nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs." - John McCain |

| Resident Panpsychist | LOL!!!! Yeah, I remember that too. Pretty primitive monochrome stuff. Sounds like your flight plan was identical to mine! Today, FS is incredibly realistic...uh...without the end game realities! I am constantly surprised how the landmarks of terrain detail are so accurate. Having flown a lot over the Pioneer Valley, I can recognize towers, power lines and turns in the roads that have been faithfully represented in FS. Of course, the proof is in the putting, and I suppose Michael has had time to recover from my right-seat adventures out of Worcester. However, I did keep the plane right-side up both times..... ![]() Theo "The nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs." - John McCain |

Offline | Theo - I have Fly (mac native) if you want to try that... One of the things that does happen on the sims is that they will invert buildings on runways (i.e. at ORH buildings are really along runway 33/15, but many sims have them along 29/11 - the main runway) I suppose it's away to copyright your work... “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.” - Alexis de Tocqueville Nigel the Silver |

| MINI2 Master | iPhone 3G gets announced and not a peep in the Geek thread? What's going on in here?? Conveniently my T-mo agreement ends on july 13th, just in time for the lines to die down. I can't wait. Of course I am disappointed in some of the details that still have not been added (copy & paste) but of course all I've really been waiting for is the faster speeds. Tempted to finally break down and buy a Dash GPS for its now $300 price, but now the iphone has everything it needs to do the same thing. Hopefully a 3rd party decides to make an app to do just that. And I'd also love to see apps from streaming music like Slacker and Pandora, which would be a spectacular alternative to satellite radio in the car. Given the buzz I think we'll see plenty of all of this. Just a matter of waiting. (And I'm very tired of waiting!) |

| Resident Panpsychist | I'm now on my new MacBook Pro and have been fooling around with iCal. For me, it is imperative that I have a calendar and date-linked "to do" list working in concert with each other. I note that iCal does this. Cool! What I was wondering is whether the iCal support on the iPhone has both the calendar AND a linked "to do" list? I think that the last time I twiddled the iPhone, all I saw was events rather than events and tasks. Of course, this could be due to a PEBKAC and, since the Mad Cow thing flared-up a few weeks ago, I wouldn't doubt it. Anyone know if the (new) iPhone will support "to do" lists linked to the calendar? Theo "The nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs." - John McCain |

Offline | Essex is a 3G black hole - actually i'ts basically a 2G(?) black hole for AT&T too, but who cares when the company has WiFi ... and many computers ![]() The 3G would be useful if it works when I'm not at home or work and don't have WiFi - but that's a big "if". I might be tempted to upgrade just for the GPS integration. Of course applications coming down the pipe might now expect to use 3G speeds and be much less useable on the original iPhone, too. I really am disappointed that there's zero news about voice dialling! And cut/paste may or may not be disappointing, depending how good the Wordpress app will be (main loss of cut/paste would be when posting links - or pics - to the weblog) |

| Resident Panpsychist | I must say that one advantage of living in the Pioneer Valley is the 3G coverage. I think AT&T is making sure the FIve College market is theirs since they are competing with Verizon for 3G coverage. Of course, AT&T have the iPhone... | Resident Panpsychist | Do you keep an electronic task list or do you (*gasp*) use paper? Do you use Outlook tasks? I am trying to get the Outlook calendar<>task functionality across platforms. Oh well, apps should abound for that purpose in the future. Interesting that neither the enterprise-enabled (Exchange) iPhone connection nor the MobileMe connection support Outlook tasks. ![]() "The nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs." - John McCain |

Offline | Ask Josh, or Christian ![]() If I put a "to do" in that column to the right of the iCal screen, that seems to be the only place it goes; it doesn't seem to have any due date, so it doesn't appear in the calendar. You might want to look at Google Calendar - the Google apps all work quite nicely on the iPhone browser. Don't know about to do lists in there though. |

Offline | I thought it was very significant that the new iPhone has only (only?) the 3G speed, GPS, more memory and costs less. None of the rumored front facing camera, 2.8in screen, video recording / conferencing. Either all those things were wishful thinking / Apple misinformation or there's another iPhone coming. I wouldn't be surprised to see iPhone 3.0 in time for the Christmas rush. What is good is that the 2.0 firmware will work on all 1.0 phones. I agree with John Gruber that what's important here is not the hardware, but the platform. When do you see the latest version of Windows Mobile getting spots on the main national news bulletins..? Apple has a hill to climb, but it looks like there is a lot of potential building. Funny that a WinMo phone or a Blackberry is just expected to work with corporate apps, it's news when Apple makes their phone do it. ![]() I don't think Satan is skating to work, but the Exchange support is a little odd for an Apple fan. I'm going to use it, no doubt, but will it be seen as the beginning of the end for OS X but the pundits? First it's coming to iPhone 2.0, then to the desktop in 10.6. I can see a lot of people saying it shows Apple should just give up and install Vista on their (so-called) expensive hardware. Me, I think it's a great Trojan Horse move by Apple. I'm sure one of the biggest barriers to Macs in corporate environments is the Exchange server. It runs the email and calendar that businesses rely on. I use Groupcal to try to bridge between Exchange and iCal but it's not very good and the guy hasn't updated it to 10.5... I can't wait for 10.6 when I don't need that any more..! I'm hoping the iPhone 2.0 will make a usable sync route for now, but when 10.6 comes out, we won't have to wait for Microsoft to support the OpenCal standard. I predict that once we can get MS calendar and email on the desktop of a Mac, OS X use will take off, not wither. How many people do you know who use a Mac or iPhone at home but have to use a PC at work..? Is that enough of a redux of the WWDC for you Josh..! ![]() |
