| Thanks for saving me that bit of Googling, Armen! That script doesn't seem to work for G2, but this one claims to. You can restrict visibility of images on Flickr so that they're only accessible to contacts flagged family and/or friends. And I don't generally upload images that I wouldn't want to get into someone else's hands. ![]() I hosted my own server at home for about five years and gave that up when I moved into an apartment last year. It's generally too much work for me to deal with, especially when you depend on it for whatever reason and it goes belly up. I now pay for a hosting account with TextDrive (which I think is going to change soon) and use Flickr extensively. I'm still responsible for the software I run on my hosted account (WordPress, mainly) and even that's more of a pain than I want to deal with most of the time...Ian, if you want to make the jump to Flickr, I'd be happy to help you there. I've got some experience with the Flickr API and I used to have some decent PHP chops. |

| I wouldn't want to fog up the flickr metaverse with EVERY photo. It's a community to me, and I post only my good photos to flickr, or at least those that warrant discussion. But every photo of mine is publicly viewable on my regular server. On the contrary, flickr provides much better privacy controls, allowing you to specify which groups can see the photo, as well as various copyright and sharing specifications. Considering I regularly use the Photos from My Contacts on the front page to view everyone's new photos, and I go until I hit photos I've seen before, I would be very very unhappy if one of you suddenly posted 6500 photos.. But the absolute bottom line is never keep your photos in just one place. |

| Thanks for that link Brian - I knew about the first one, but also knew it was G1 only. I kept my old G1 albums up for a few weeks for exactly that reason ... and deleted it just two days before Site5 started messing up, and I found the crazy file count on G2! Of course, Josh is right ... Flickr perhaps isn't the place to move 6,500 photos! |

![]() You mean backups, I presume? Or are you saying I should have multiple galleries all over the web?! |

| We had "rolling blackouts" yesterday on our network, I couldn't go anywhere, even internally, all afternoon. I knew something was really wrong when my ethernet showed it was disconnected, meaning my local switch was down, but once we realized it wasn't just our room but everyone, that means that some error spread like a virus and shut down all the switches! Crazy...it took them well into the evening to manually reset them all. Sometime I think I'd like a managed switch at home to create my own subnets etc...but something like this makes you think twice. I sure did get plenty of miles in pacing all afternoon waiting for that network to go back up. Yes, backups, of course. I would, because as long as I see one new photo, I click on that contact's name and view all their photos till I get ton one I've seen before, then go back to my contacts page and move on to the next person, till I catch up to where I last did that. With only 5 shown there's no easy way to tell just how many they have posted. I'll get to page 5 or 6 of someone's photostream when I realize I better check out just how many photos they uploaded.. |

| I've been back and forth with a person at apple trying to renew my certifications (a PITA as the government, which prints money by the way, doesn't actually use it--everything must be purchased with POs) and at the end I get this: On a completely separate note, I've been an avid reader of your Mini Cooper page. Small world. Indeed! We've seen proof of a lot of MINI owners at Pixar...is it catching on at Apple too? |

| BTW: GBMINI.net (and all Moiras hosted websites) down again ![]() Starting to look elsewhere |
| |||
| Moiras is the server my sites are on. One of many - see: Server Uptime Reports and for Moiras specifically: WebSitePulse Monitoring Service - Customer Report Note their 94.9% uptime for the month so far! They are claiming (Service Disruption: Moiras - Site5 Web Hosting Forums) that a "quick reboot" (their standard Microsoft inspired repair technique) led to them deciding the drive was going bad (that took them an hour), it then took two hours to fit a new drive, three more hours to get the machine ready for reloading server data (for no idea how many websites) and that's been ongoing a couple of hours so far. Note that this same "drive failure" issue has happened before since I switched to them - in march maybe? I'd look it up on my website, if it wasn't down ![]() I've been trolling for what else is out there ... this lot talk about "failover" technology (Hosting Zoom - Clustered Failover Web Hosting) which is basically live redundancy in the server ... I like that idea better than Site5. |
